ROWING WINS SILVER AT THE WIRA CHAMPIONSHIPS

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The Gonzaga women''s varsity eight rowed to a winning time of 6:49.7 over 2,000 meters, a little over three seconds faster than Sacramento State (6:53.0), to win the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship Sunday afternoon on Lake Natoma.

Sacramento State had won the last two varsity eight WIRA championships prior to finishing second today. San Diego won the bronze medal with a time of 6:55.7, followed by San Diego State (6:56.6), Loyola Marymount (6:57.1) and UC Davis (6:58.7). The WIRA Championships include every rowing institution on the West Coast that is not a member of the Pac-10 (a total of 25 schools).

Sacramento State won its varsity eight qualifying heat yesterday to advance to today''s grand final. Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount won the other two qualifying heats yesterday.

For the second-consecutive day, the Hornets'' varsity eight lineup featured Hannah Metzger at bow, Stephanie Brow at the two seat, Robyn Soliman at three, Veronica Karpinski at four, Adelle Reimer at five, Megan Warren at six, Megan Spitze at seven, Mieke Boynton at stroke and Breanne Hart at coxswain.

Brow, Reimer and Karpinski were each named to the all-WIRA team.

Gonzaga was also victorious in the second varsity eight competition with a time of 7:00.2, followed by San Diego State (7:03.7), Sacramento State (7:03.9), Orange Coast College (7:06.8), UC Davis (7:13.8) and Santa Clara (7:27.7). The Hornets'' bronze medal marked the first time in program history the second varsity eight had finished in the top three at the WIRA Championships.

In the varsity four competition, Pacific Lutheran rowed to a winning time of 7:42.5, followed by Seattle Pacific (7:51.0), UC Santa Barbara (7:54.5), Seattle University (7:55.3), Portland (8:05.1) and Sacramento State (8:09.2).

Other women''s grand final winners included UC Davis (novice lightweight four and second novice eight), Seattle Pacific (novice four, pair and lightweight four), San Diego State (novice eight) and UC Santa Barbara (lightweight eight).
