The Hornets, who have now defeated the Aggies five times in the six years the teams have raced for the cup, finished the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:52.4, followed by UC Davis (6:58.8). The Aggies had a four-seat lead during the early stages of the race (200 meters) before Sacramento State drew even at the 600-meter mark. The Hornets built up a boat''s-length lead at the 1,500-meter mark and continued to expand on that lead during the final 500 meters of the race.

Sacramento State also won the second varsity eight competition, racing to a winning time of 7:12.5, followed closely by UC Davis (7:14.3). The Aggies won the novice eight race with a time of 7:22.2, followed by UC Davis "B" (7:27.1) and Sacramento State (7:32.6).

Head coach Bill Zack used the following varsity eight lineup for the first time this season: Chanel Patterson at bow, Stephanie Brow at the two seat, Robyn Soliman at three, Veronica Karpinski at four, Adelle Reimer at five, Megan Warren at six, Megan Spitze at seven, Mieke Boynton at stroke and Breanne Hart at coxswain.

Assistant coach Katie Summy used the following second varsity eight lineup: Paula Clamurro at bow, Rebecca Hurtt at two, Hannah Metzger at three, Angela Tombolini at four, Erika Bracy at five, Pattie Shagam at six, Jamie Weatherfield at seven, Sarah McKenzie at stoke and Jenna DuBois at coxswain.
