SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women''s varsity eight raced to a second-place finish in the Cal Cup Petite Final of the San Diego Crew Classic Sunday morning at Mission Bay. The Hornets were edged by less than half a second by first-place finishing Loyola Marymount.The Lions crossed the 2,000-meter finish line with a winning time of 6:59.70, followed by Sacramento State (6:59.97), Villanova (7:04.27), San Diego (7:05.33), San Diego State (7:05.88) and North Carolina (7:16.63). The Hornets led the race at the 500, 1,000 and 1,500-meter marks before Loyola Marymount overtook Sacramento State at the finish line.
Sacramento State qualified for the Petite Final after finishing fourth in its respective heat yesterday. Loyola Marymount and Sacramento State have now competed against one another in three races this season with the Lions victorious on two occasions. The two crews have been within four seconds of each other in all three races.
Head coach Bill Zack used the following varsity eight lineup for the second-consecutive day: Robyn Soliman at bow, Stephanie Brow at the two seat, Adelle Reimer at three, Veronica Karpinski at four, Erika Bracy at five, Megan Warren at six, Megan Spitze at seven, Mieke Boynton at stroke and Breanne Hart at coxswain.
Sacramento State''s second varsity eight and novice eight both competed yesterday. The second varsity eight raced to a third-place finish in the third-level final, while the novice eight finished second in the third-level final.
The Hornets return to the water next Saturday, April 13, as they compete against UC Davis for the Jean Runyon Cup at the Port of Sacramento. The Hornets have defeated the Aggies each of the last three years.
