ROWING WINS FOUR RACES IN SEASON-OPENING SACRAMENTO STATE INVITATIONAL

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State’s women’s varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and second novice eight were all victorious in their respective races Saturday morning at the Sacramento State Rowing Invitational on Lake Natoma. The regatta marked the spring’s season opener for Sacramento State.

Along with the Hornets, the Sacramento State Invitational included crews from Portland, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, Saint Mary’s, Sonoma State and Mills College.

The Hornets competed in seven races during the day, and finished with four first-place finishes, a third-place finish, and two fourth-place finishes.

In the varsity eight race, the Hornets posted a 2,000-meter winning time of 6:50.8, followed by Saint Mary’s (6:54.6) and Portland (6:57.0) to round out the top three in a seven-boat field.

In the second varsity eight competition, Sacramento State finished with a winning time of 7:04.4, followed by Portland (7:07.4), UC San Diego (7:13.8), Humboldt State (7:21.5), Saint Mary’s (7:24.3) and Humboldt State B (7:47.2).

In the novice eight, Sacramento State posted a four-second victory (7:17.7) over its next closest competitor, besting Humboldt State (7:21.9) and Portland (7:26.4) to round out the top three in a six-boat field.

The Hornets were also victorious in the second novice eight with a time of 7:36.8.

Sacramento State finished third in the novice four, and fourth in both the varsity four and second varsity four competitions.

The Hornets return to action a week from today when they host San Diego State at 8 a.m.
