ROWING PARTICIPATES IN FUNDRAISER FOR LUNG CANCER AWARENESS
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - For the third straight year, members of the Sacramento State rowing program participated in the ‘Your Next Step is the Cure San Francisco 5k walk/run’ in a fight to cure lung cancer on Sunday, Sept. 16, at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
Organized by the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, a group of nearly 40 Hornet rowers, head coach Mike Connors and friends of the program participated in the event in honor of former Cal coxswain Jill Costello, who passed away from lung cancer on June, 24, 2010. In fact, the squad participated as team entry “Team Hornet Rowing for Jill”.
Nearly $200,000 has been raised for lung cancer research at the event, including Sacramento State rowers raising over $800.
Near the end of her life, Costello became involved with the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, which promotes lung cancer awareness and raises funds to find a cure. She helped raise $50,000 for lung cancer research and rallied 1,000 people for the initial Jog for Jill event in February of 2010.
