SHUTLER MATCHES SEASON LOW IN SECOND ROUND OF BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP

CHANDLER, Ariz. —
 Julie Shutler's 2-over 74 was the best by a Sacramento State golfer during the second round of the Black Clover Big Sky Women's Golf Championship, Tuesday at the Ocotillo Golf Resort.

Shutler moved into a tie for 14th place, however, the Hornets fell one spot and are now sixth with one round remaining. Portland State extended its first-day lead with an impressive 1-over 287 as a team. The Vikings stand at 303-287-590 and are 10 strokes ahead of Northern Arizona. Montana (611), Northern Colorado (613) and Montana State (623) complete the top five.

Senior Samantha Saffold is tied for 10th and is the highest Sacramento State golfer. Saffold shot her second-consecutive 76 and is looking to finish in the top 10 for the the fourth time in as many years. On Tuesday, Saffold was even through four holes with the help of a birdie on the par-4 third. She then bogeyed two straight holes before birdying the par-3 seventh. The Sacramento native then parred eight of the next nine holes with the exception being a bogey on the 14th. A double-bogey on the par-4 17th and a par on 18 closed her round.

Shutler was even the through her first seven holes and eventually stood at 1-over through 12. A bogey on the par-4 13th took her to 2-over but she earned the stroke back with a birdie on the par-3 16th. A par on 17 was followed by a bogey on the par-5 18th. The 74 tied Shutler's season low which came in the second round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on April 6.

Kercia Brakel is tied for 21st after shooting 77-79-156. In the second round, Brakel made 11 pars and had seven bogeys.

The team also had a pair of 83s from Ellese Dias and Kristen Watson. Watson is tied for 32nd at 80-83-163 while Dias is tied for 34th at 81-83-164.

Portland State's Britney Yada pushed her lead to four strokes with a 4-under 68. Yada holds the individual lead after shooting 72-68-140.
