The Sacramento State athletics department encourages competitive female collegiate and high school athletes who possess a great work ethic and are driven to succeed to try out for the women’s rowing team.
No prior rowing experience is necessary. Approximately two-thirds of our roster is composed of athletes who took their first strokes at Sacramento State, including recent all-West Region Hornet alums Stephanie Brow (2004), Laura Harder (2005) and Aimee Chenard (2008).
Rowing at Sacramento State provides female athletes without any rowing experience a rare opportunity to become a member of a varsity, NCAA Division I team. Interested athletes can get started by filling out this questionnaire. For more information, contact Vanessa Tavalero at tavelero@saclink.csus.edu or (916) 278-2928.
We are seeking student-athletes to be rowers and coxswains. We spend most of your first semester in rowing learning the basic technique and establishing some base level of fitness. Rowing has fall races, but our traditional race season is spring so the intensity and amount of training will increase as we get closer to our first 2000-meter race in March. This allows the athlete to adapt gradually to the workload and schedule demands over time as you settle into your first year of college.
The women’s rowing program gained intercollegiate status at Sacramento State in 1995, and since that time, has accounted for four conference championships. That includes two Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association team titles in the last three years. Since 2004, Sacramento State’s top three boats comprised of the varsity eight (35-3), second varsity eight (23-3) and novice eight (35-6) have combined for a dual-meet record of 93-12.
The Hornets compete at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, which is widely considered the premier rowing site in the country. In fact, the facility has hosted many regional and national events, including the 1997, 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2008 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships, the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships, and the S.W. Jr. Regional High School Championships.
