WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PICKED SEVENTH IN PRESEASON BIG SKY POLLS

OGDEN, Utah - Sacramento State was picked to finish seventh in the preseason Big Sky Media Poll and tied for seventh in the Big Sky Coaches' Poll released by the conference on Tuesday.

The Hornets earned 86 points in the media poll, coming in just three points behind Idaho State and 10 points ahead of Weber State. In the coaches' poll, Sacramento State and Weber State were tied for seventh with 60 points, four behind Idaho State.

The polls were split on the Big Sky champion, with Montana State earning the first-place vote in the media poll and Idaho taking the top spot in the coaches' poll. Montana State was the regular season Big Sky champion last season while Idaho won the Big Sky Tournament.

Montana, Eastern Washington, North Dakota, and Idaho State joined the Bobcats and Vandals in varying order ahead of Sacramento State. The Hornets were picked to finish well ahead of the other four teams in the league.

Sacramento State finished seventh in the Big Sky last year with a 10-8 league record. The Hornets knocked off Southern Utah in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament before narrowly falling to Eastern Washington, 100-97, in the quarterfinals. The format for the Big Sky Tournament will be identical to last season, with all 12 teams qualifying for the four-round tournament in Reno.

The Hornets return three starters and 10 letter winners from the 2015-16 season. The team is the most veteran squad in the four-year tenure of coach Bunky Harkleroad, with six seniors and five juniors and a total of 20 years of experience playing in Harkleroad's high-tempo system.
