New women's basketball head coach Bunky Harkleroad joined the Hornets just two weeks ago ahead of the 2013-14 season, which begins on Sunday as the Hornets will host UC Santa Cruz in an exhibition game at 2 p.m. Despite his busy schedule Harkleroad gave a few minutes of his time for a Q&A with hornetsports.com.

Q: How do you feel about the team you inherited?
A: I'm just very excited about the opportunity and am looking forward to continuing our work with them. I think there's tremendous potential to have a great season here.

Q: How much of a challenge is it to take over right before the start of the season?
A: It's just a great opportunity. We're not looking at how hard it is but we're looking at it as doing our best to improve as much as we can in the shortest amount of time and get ready to compete.

Q: How would you describe your coaching philosophy?
A: Our offensive philosophy is based on an up-tempo, fast paced attack that relies on aggressiveness on both ends of the court based heavily on the 3-point shot, frequent substitutions, and dictating how the game is played.

Q: How do you feel about coaching in Division I?
A: It's the opportunity of a lifetime. I'm excited and it's just a tremendous opportunity that we're going to take advantage of.

Q: Was coaching Division I a goal of yours at the start of your coaching career?
A: My philosophy has always been to do the best job you can and see where life takes you. I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing but I never would have envisioned myself in West Virginia and never would have thought about moving to California, but when this opportunity presented itself there wasn't a doubt in my mind that this is where I'm supposed to be.

Q: How do you feel moving to the west coast?
A: It's exciting to get to go to a lot of places we've never been. It's really easy to get excited about the weather and the location and I think there are a lot of resources here. It's a great fit and it was a no-brainer to make the move.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you are excited about in California?
A: I'm just excited about the opportunity to be here because it seems like a really good fit. We can be very successful recruiting here and I think this school is eager to have what we are going to bring to the table.

Q: What hobbies do you have outside of basketball?
A: I like to swim, bike, and run. I like to read a lot. I like to eat a lot (laughs). I enjoy spending time with my friends and my family and I probably need to work on my golf game a bit. I just like to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Q: Are there any other sports you are interested in?
A: I love to watch all sports. I like watching sports at different levels too.

Q: How excited are you about joining the Hornet Athletics family?
A: I'm excited to be a part of the Hornet family here and its something I've always valued as a coach in college. These are great jobs and you get to be around neat people that are passionate about what they do and I just think its great.
