CORVALLIS, Ore. -
"We executed our offensive game plan really well," said head coach . "And as much as we could pressure them we did. We didn't force a ton of mistakes but I think the tempo wore them down. had a really good game at the point, Kylie was great on the boards and Se'nyce was just incredible."
The Hornets (4-2) won their fourth straight game in thrilling fashion. Parrish scored six of her 39 points in the overtime period as the Hornets went 4-of-6 from the field and outscored the Beavers 12-3 in extra time.
Parrish hit one of her school record tying nine three-pointers to start the overtime period and canned another with 2:41 left on the clock to cap a 7-1 run for the Hornets. Overall, the junior from Clovis, Calif., went 13-of-18 from the field including 9-of-13 from three-point range. Her nine three-pointers tied Michelle St. Clair's school record, set against UC Riverside on Jan. 20, 2001.
Parrish was 7-of-31 from the field and 2-of-17 on three-pointers in her last three games but shot 72.2 percent overall and 69.2 percent from deep against the Beavers. Parrish's previous career-best was 15 points, set against Cal State Fullerton earlier this season. Her 39 points was just shy of the Big Sky Conference record of 41 points and short of the Hornets' school record of 45 points, set by Kristy Ryan in 1993 before the Hornets entered the league.
"We haven't been shooting the ball well recently so we thought someone was due," Craighead added. "Se'nyce did a great job finding shots and was just in the zone tonight. What is great is she really didn't know how many shots she took and how many points she had. She was just really focused today."
Even bigger than her overtime three-pointers was Parrish's clutch shot from downtown with just 18 seconds left. Oregon State retook the lead, 66-65, with 33 seconds left in regulation but on the following Sacramento State possession, Parrish knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing to give the Hornets a two-point lead. After missing their next shot, the Beavers were fouled on the ensuing loose ball and Ali Gibson connected on both free throws to tie up the game with six seconds left and forced overtime.
Sacramento State led by as much as 10 in the first half but Oregon State held a 41-30 advantage at halftime. After the Beavers hit a three-pointer to make it 44-32 with 17:56 left in the second half, the Hornets used a 17-1 run over the next 3:03 to take a 47-45 lead. There were two ties and four lead changes in the final five minutes of regulation.
The win was the program's second ever against a Pac-12 foe, with both coming under Craighead, an Oregon alum. Before knocking off the Beavers, the Hornets defeated Washington 74-71 during the 2009-10 season, Craighead's first at the helm. Sacramento State has now defeated Oregon State in football (2011), men's basketball (2009-10) and women's basketball (2012-13) within the last four years.
While Parrish came up big for the Hornets on the offensive end, Kuhns cleaned up on the glass. The senior grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds, which is the second most in her career. Kuhns recorded a school-record 23 boards against San Francisco in her sophomore season. Hilliard chipped in 11 points and eight assists.
Oregon State had three players in double figures, led by Jamie Weisner's 19. Ruth Hamblin had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Sacramento State shot 39.2 percent overall on 29-of-74 shooting, including 13-of-20 from three-point range. The Hornets snagged 47 rebounds, committed 13 turnovers and tallied 23 assists. They went 9-of-17 at the free throw line.
Oregon State shot 33.8 percent from the field on 27-of-80 shooting, with 9-of-30 coming from beyond the arc. The Beavers grabbed 61 rebounds and were pressured into 16 turnovers with 17 assists. They went just 8-of-20 at the free throw line.
The Hornets will continue their five-game road trip next week with visits to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois. The Cougars and Panthers both lost in visits to Sacramento last season.
Sacramento State's next home game is against rival UC Davis on Dec. 30. scored a career-high 39 points and pulled down 20 rebounds as the Sacramento State women's basketball team defeated Oregon State, 80-71, in overtime on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Gill Coliseum.
