WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EDGED BY PORTLAND STATE

2/15/2003

PORTLAND, Ore. — Nikki Petticrew led all players with 15 points and Portland State forced 26 Hornet turnovers as the Vikings defeated Sacramento State, 69-55, in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Saturday evening at the Stott Center.

With the victory, Portland State, which defeated Sacramento State for the second time this season, improved its record to 10-12 overall and 5-4 in the Big Sky. The Hornets lost their 10th-straight game while dropping to 2-20 and 0-9 in the conference.

After Sacramento State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on a three-pointer by junior Diane Peterson, the Vikings responded with an 11-2 run to go ahead, 11-5, with 15:52 to play in the first half. Portland State would never trail again as the Hornets sliced the Viking lead to one point on three occasions during the first half but could never reclaim the lead. Portland State led by as many as eight points in the first half before taking a 31-25 lead into the break.

The Vikings opened the second half on a 9-3 run to take a 12-point lead (40-28) with 16:14 to play. PSU never led by anything less than 11 points the rest of the way.

The Vikings outscored the Hornets, 40-22, in the paint and shot 42.6 percent (26-61) from the field. Five PSU players finished with at least two steals as the Vikings recorded 19 steals as a team, the most by a Hornet opponent this season.

Although Sacramento State outrebounded the Vikings, 41-35, the team shot just 38.0 percent (19-50) from the field and attempted 11 less shots than Portland State (61-50).

Petticrew’s 15 points came on 5-of-9 shooting while Michelle Thueson added 10 point to round out the Vikings in double figures. Sacramento State was led by post players Kristine Knowlton and Danielle Iceman who each finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Eight of Knowlton’s 12 points came from the free throw line.

Junior Sydney Gatson added eight points and seven rebounds while freshman Sarah Craig was limited to a season-low tying five points.

Sacramento State returns to action next week for home games against Weber State (Thursday, Feb. 20) and Idaho State (Saturday, Feb. 22). The Hornets have just five games remaining on the schedule.
