WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO MONTANA STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Five Bobcats scored in double figures, led by Kati Burrows and Megan Foy who each posted 20 points, as Montana State defeated Sacramento State, 91-53, in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Thursday evening at the Hornets Nest.

With the victory, Montana State, which shot 50.7 percent (37-73) from the field and outrebounded the Hornets, 51-38, improved to 13-4 overall and 4-0 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State lost for the sixth-consecutive time while dropping to 2-16 and 0-5 in the conference.

Sacramento State was held scoreless for a little over nine minutes in the first half as Montana State scored 13 unanswered points to take a 25-7 lead with 9:07 remaining. Montana State pushed its lead to as many as 26 points in the first half before taking a 42-20 lead into the break. The Hornets converted on just 5-of-29 (17.2 percent) shots from the field in the first half while committing 12 turnovers.

Montana State scored the first four points of the second half to push its lead to 26 points (46-20) with 18:46 remaining. Sacramento State cut the lead to 23 points, but that was as close as the Hornets would get the rest of the game. The Bobcats’ 38-point margin of victory was also the team’s largest lead of the contest.

Sacramento State shot just 22.4 percent (13-58) from the field, marking the its second-lowest output of the season. The Hornets also committed 27 turnovers as all eight players that received playing time in the contest committed at least one turnover.

Joining Foy and Burrows in double figures for Montana State were Isabel Stubbs (11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds and four blocked shots), Brandi Lewis (10 points) and Cassie Johnson (10 points). Foy, who went 12-of-13 from the free throw line, also had nine rebounds in 20 minutes.

For Sacramento State, sophomore Kristine Knowlton narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with eight points, a career-high eight blocked shots and a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Junior Diane Peterson was the only Hornet in double figures as the guard finished with 14 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals. Freshman Megan Moon contributed eight points, including a team-best two three-pointers.

The Hornets return to action this Saturday, Feb. 1, as they host Montana at 7:05 p.m. inside the Hornets Nest.
