WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TOPPED BY SAN DIEGO

Freshman Katelyn Ciampi scored a career-high 15 points against USD.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Marta Menuez scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Erin Malich and Tiara Harris each scored 11 points to lead the University of San Diego to a 71-45 win over Sacramento State in women’s basketball action Friday night.

With the win, the Toreros improved to 4-1. The Hornets fell to 0-4.

USD never trailed in the game and led by double digits for the final five minutes of the first half. Polly Dong gave the team a 37-23 lead at halftime with a layuup in the final seconds of the period. San Diego built on its lead in the second half and never led by less than 16.

As a team, USD attempted 13 more shots than Sacramento State (65-52) and made 12 more field goals (27-15). The Toreros also had a 10-rebound advantage (46-36) and forced the Hornets into 22 turnovers.

Sacramento State freshman Katelyn Ciampi scored a game-high 15 points (on 6-of-9 shooting) while freshman Sarah Craig added 14 points and team highs in both rebounds (eight) and assists (four). After missing the first three games of the season with a back injury, junior Sydney Gatson returned to play 19 minutes and scored five points to go along with two rebounds.

Sacramento State struggled from the field, making just 15 of its 52 attempts (28.8 percent). Ciampi was the only Hornet to shoot above 40 percent from the floor. The team’s troubles were even worse from long range where they were 1-of-14 (7.1 percent).

The Hornets continue their homestand on Sunday against Nevada. The game will start at 2:05 p.m. in Hornet Gym. The contest will also be broadcasted on KTKZ 1380 AM.
