HONOLULU -- UCLA led from start to finish while Sacramento State shot 18.3 percent (11-60) from the field as the Bruins defeated the Hornets, 106-43, at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Women’s Basketball Classic Sunday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center. The game marked the season opener for Sacramento State as the team wraps up the three-team, two-game tournament tomorrow (Monday, Nov. 25) against host Hawai’i. UCLA, which narrowly lost to Hawai’i yesterday in the first round of the tournament, improved to 1-1 on the season.
The Bruins, who were led by Nikki Blue’s game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, scored 32 of the game’s first 38 points as the Hornets made just two of their first 16 shots from the floor. UCLA led at the half, 53-17, as the Hornets shot 13.0 percent (3-23) from the floor during the first stanza. The Bruins’ 63-point margin of victory was also their largest lead of the contest.
Joining Blue in double figures for UCLA were Michelle Greco (19 points), Lisa Willis (14 points) and Julia Pitts (12 points). The Bruins shot 48.3 percent (42-87) from the field and outrebounded the Hornets, 63-36.
Sacramento State was led by junior Danielle Iceman’s 16 points as the power forward converted on 10-of-14 free throws. In her first game with the Hornets after redshirting last season, junior point guard Dolores Olivarez finished with 10 points. Senior Crystal Conley led Sacramento State with seven rebounds while freshman Katelyn Ciampi added eight points and four rebounds.
Hornet freshman Sarah Craig, who is the team’s starting small forward, sat out today’s game because of religious convictions. Craig will also miss the Hornets’ home game against Nevada (Sunday, Dec. 8) for the same reason.
Sacramento State’s starting lineup featured four newcomers (freshmen Megan Moon and Ciampi, and juniors Diane Peterson and Olivarez) and one returner (Iceman).
The Hornets’ 63-point margin of defeat was the third-worst loss in program history.
Monday’s game against Hawai’i will begin at 9 p.m. PST.
