CHENEY, Wash. -- Four Eagles scored in double figures, led by Alison Chase’s 17 points as Eastern Washington cruised to a 73-44 victory over Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Friday evening at Reese Court. With the victory, Eastern Washington won its third-consecutive game and improved to 10-16 overall and 6-7 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State dropped its 36th-consecutive game while falling to 0-26 overall and 0-13 in the conference.
Eastern Washington shot 46.8 percent (29-62) from the field while the Hornets shot just 31.4 percent (16-51). Sacramento State committed 20 turnovers and was outrebounded, 41-34. The Eagles’ Kathleen Nygaard (14), Stephanie Ulmer (11) and Allie Bailey (10) also scored in double figures.
The Eagles led from start to finish as the team jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead. EWU pushed its lead to 14 points (25-11) at the 9:08 mark of the first half on a Bailey jumper. Eastern Washington went into halftime with a 39-25 lead and scored the first seven points of the second half to go up 21 (46-25) with 17:23 remaining in the contest.
The Eagles pushed their lead to as many as 33 points in the second half before settling for the 29-point victory.
Sydney Gatson was the only Hornet in double figures as the sophomore finished with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Freshman Kristine Knowlton led the team with eight rebounds and two blocked shots. All eight players that entered the game for Sacramento State cracked into the scoring column.
Senior Lori Kerswell and freshman Tamica Estrella each played all 40 minutes for the Hornets.
Sacramento State concludes the 2001-02 season tomorrow (Saturday, March 2) at Portland State.
