NYGAARD AND BAILEY PACE EASTERN WASHINGTON TO VICTORY OVER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Allie Bailey (18) and Kathleen Nygaard (17) combined for 35 points as Eastern Washington cruised to a 78-59 victory over Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Saturday evening in Hornet Gym.

Eastern Washington, which shot 52.5 percent (31-59) from the field, improved to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State dropped to 0-20 and 0-7 in the conference. The Hornets have now lost a program-record 30-consecutive games dating back to last season.

The Eagles led from start to finish as they jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead. The Hornets cut the lead to three points (15-12) with 11:57 to play in the first half, but would get no closer the rest of the way. For the second-consecutive night, Sacramento State struggled in the first half as it was outscored, 34-18, while shooting just 27.6 percent (8-29) from the floor. For the game, the Hornets shot 40.4 percent (23-57) from the field.

Bailey knocked down 9-of-14 shots from the field while scoring eight of the Eagles’ first 15 points of the contest. Nygaard went 5-of-8 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Michelle Demetruk added 11 points to round out the Eagles in double-figure points.

Sacramento State forward Danielle Iceman led all players with 23 points as the sophomore went 10-of-13 from the floor while grabbing eight rebounds. Sophomore Sydney Gatson finished with 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds, and junior Samantha Miller added nine points. Freshman Kristine Knowlton grabbed eight rebounds.

The Hornets outrebounded Eastern Washington, 36-30, but were badly outshot from the field while committing 21 turnovers in the process. All eight Sacramento State players which appeared in the game cracked into the scoring column.

Sacramento State, which has seven games remaining on its schedule, travels to Weber State (Thursday, Feb. 7) and Idaho State (Saturday, Feb. 9) next week.
