WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO MONTANA, 79-56

1/26/2002

MISSOULA, Mont. -- Hollie Tyler scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Montana to a 79-56 Big Sky Conference victory over the Sacramento State women’s basketball team Saturday evening at Dahlberg Arena.

Sacramento State is now 0-18 overall and 0-5 in the Big Sky while the Lady Griz improved to 14-5, 6-0.

Leading the way for the Hornets was sophomore forward Danielle Iceman, who scored a game and career-high 25 points. The Redding, Calif., native finished the contest shooting 9-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line while adding six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore forward Alyson Thurman (14) and sophomore point guard Sydney Gatson (10) also finished with double-figure points for the Hornets. Gatson added career highs in both rebounds (nine) and assists (seven).

The Lady Griz used an early 17-4 run to take a 21-8 lead with 10:40 left in the first half. Montana then scored the final seven points of the period to take its largest lead of the half at 46-26.

The Hornets cut the deficit to 12 after Iceman scored five of the Hornets’ eight points to begin the second half with an 8-0 run. After two Montana baskets, the Hornets went on a 7-0 run to pull within nine at 50-41 with 13:12 to play. It would be the last time the lead went below double-digits as Montana answered with a 9-0 run to keep its undefeated Big Sky record in tact.

The Hornets’ 56 points were the most scored by the team since recording 63 against Idaho State on Jan. 11. The squad also set a season low for fewest turnovers with 17.

Simarron Schildt also finished in double figures for the Lady Griz (10 points) while Brooklyn Lorenzen added a career-high 11 assists. Montana head coach Robin Selvig recorded his 550th career win since taking over the program in the 1978-79 season.

Sacramento State returns to action on Friday, Feb. 1, as the team hosts Portland State at 7:05 p.m. at Hornet Gym.
