1/12/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Weber State outscored the Hornets, 42-26, in the second half en route to a 70-53 victory over Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Saturday evening in Hornet Gym.

The Wildcats (12-5, 4-0 Big Sky), who won their seventh game in a row, knocked down six three-pointers and forced the Hornets into 13 turnovers in the second half. Sacramento State dropped to 0-15 and 0-2 in the conference.

Stephanie Stanger scored 17 of her game-high 20 points in the second half as the senior knocked down four three-pointers, including three in the first four minutes of the second frame. Crystal Howe added 14 points and Julie Gjertsen added 12 to round out the Wildcats in double figures.

Weber State went on a 17-9 run over the first 4:15 of the second half to break open what had been a one-point halftime lead. The Hornets closed to within five points (49-44) at the 10:25 mark of the second half, but would get no closer as Weber State responded with a 17-6 run to go up, 66-50, with a little over a minute to play. The 17-point margin of defeat was the Wildcats’ largest lead of the night.

Sacramento State shot a season-high 46.3 percent (19-41) from the floor but turned the ball over 26 times, including 13 in the pivotal second half. Weber State shot 37.7 percent (23-61) from the field, but went 8-of-20 (40.0 percent) from beyond the three-point line.

Danielle Iceman led the Hornets in scoring for the third-consecutive game as the sophomore tallied 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Iceman is now averaging 17.7 points over her last three games. Sophomore Sydney Gatson added 10 points as the point guard has now scored in double figures in three of her last four games. Junior Kendra Yancey and sophomore Alyson Thurman shared the team lead with six rebounds. Thurman has at least had a share of the team lead in rebounds in nine of the last 10 games.

Weber State opened the game on an 11-0 run before Sacramento State went on a 12-4 run to close within three (15-12) with 13:28 to play in the first half. The Wildcats pushed their lead to as many as seven points on two occasions before the Hornets closed the half on a 13-7 run to go into halftime down, 28-27.

Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 19, as the team travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., to take on conference-foe Northern Arizona.
