FREE THROWS PROVE TO BE THE DIFFERENCE AS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO IDAHO STATE

1/11/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Mandi Carver recorded a game-high 23 points and 16 rebounds, and Idaho State converted 27-of-33 free throws as the Bengals defeated Sacramento State, 75-63, in both teams’ Big Sky Conference opener Friday night in Hornet Gym.

With the victory, Idaho State, which went 16-0 in conference play last season, improved its record to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State dropped to 0-14 and 0-1 in the Big Sky. The Hornets have now lost 24 games in a row dating back to last season.

Free throws proved to be the difference in the game as Sacramento State went 12-of-20 from the charity stripe compared to Idaho State’s 27-of-33. Besides the free throw disparity, every other statistical category was nearly identical. Carver, who knocked down 10-of-24 shots from the field, is now tied for first all-time in Idaho State program history with 1,320 career points.

After the Hornets took the early lead, 2-1, Idaho State went on a 6-2 run and never trailed the rest of the way. The Bengals opened up leads as large as 12 points in the first half and 17 points in the second half. Sacramento State recorded season highs in points (63), field goals made (25), field goals attempted (74), rebounds (48) and blocked shots (10).

Ashley Toner added 18 points as she and Carver combined for 41 of Idaho State’s 75 points.

Sacramento State was led by Danielle Iceman’s career-high 19 points as the sophomore finished 8-of-19 from the floor. Three other Hornets finished in double figures comprising sophomores Alyson Thurman (15 points, eight rebounds) and Sydney Gatson (10 points, eight rebounds) and junior Samantha Miller (11 points). Freshman Kristine Knowlton posted career highs in rebounds (eight), blocked shots (five) and steals (three).

Idaho State is now 11-0 all-time against Sacramento State.

The Hornets return to action Saturday, Jan. 12, as they host Weber State at 7:05 p.m. in Hornet Gym.
