LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Cecilia Lindqvist scored 19 points and Charlene Thomas added 14 to pace the Seton Hall women’s basketball team to an 88-46 victory over Sacramento State in the consolation game of the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout Sunday afternoon.With the victory, Seton Hall improved its record to 3-1 after losing to Tennessee Tech in the first round of the tournament last night. Sacramento State dropped to 0-5 and has now lost 15-straight spanning games last season. The Hornets have been outscored by an average of 53.2 points a game this season. Sacramento State was defeated by host UNLV last night in the opening round of the tournament.
Seton Hall shot 55.4 percent (36-65) from the field and scored 32 points off 29 Sacramento State turnovers. Charlene Thomas added 14 points and Ayanna Phillip grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Rebels.
Sacramento State was led by junior Kendra Yancey’s 14 points. Yancey, who has led the Hornets in scoring each of the last two games, also went 3-of-8 from beyond the three-point line. Sophomore Danielle Iceman added nine points and a team-high five rebounds. The Hornets shot just 22.0 percent from the field as the team converted on nine field goals in 41 attempts. Sacramento State also totalled just four assists as four of the team’s nine field goals were three-pointers.
After a Sydney Gatson free throw gave the Hornets a brief one point lead at 6-5 in the early stages of the game, Seton Hall responded with a 12-1 run to take a commanding 16-6 lead. The Pirates also went on runs of 11-1 and 10-1 in the first half, and went into halftime with a 50-24 lead.
Seton Hall, which outscored the Hornets, 50-8, in the paint, opened the second half on a 16-4 run to open up a 40-point lead. The Pirates extended their lead to as many as 49 points late in the second half before winning by 42.
In the championship game of the tournament, UNLV defeated Tennessee Tech, 88-67. The Lady Rebels’ Linda Frohlich and Constance Jinks were named co-MVP’s of the tournament.
Sacramento State returns to action next week as the team hosts San Jose State on Nov. 30 at 7:05. After the game against the Spartans, the Hornets play just once (Dec. 7 vs. Air Force) over the next two weeks as they travel to San Diego to take on the Aztecs of San Diego State on Dec. 16.
