WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT CALIFORNIA

Kylie Kuhns had her second double-double of the season in a loss at California.

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's basketball team lost, 85-61, to California in a non-conference game on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion.

The Hornets (0-3) were outscored by just two points in the second half but could not chip away at a 22 point halftime deficit. The Golden Bears (1-1) won their home opener after losing by three points at No. 15 ranked Rutgers last week.

It was tied, 9-9, with 16:07 left in the first half when Cal went on a 17-2 run to go up 15 with 10:54 remaining before halftime. The Golden Bears never looked back as they led by as much as 31 points in the second half.

Kylie Kuhns stood out for the Hornets as the junior tallied her 17th career double-double and second in three games this season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. The Salem, Ore., native went 6-of-12 from the floor and notched three assists. 

Senior Emily Christensen had a team-best 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting, including two 3-pointers.

Alle Moreno scored 11 points and was in double-figures for the second straight game after the sophomore had a career-high 16 points last weekend at Oklahoma. Moreno went 2-of-6 from 3-point range.

The Golden Bears were led by center Talie Caldwell's 17 points and 11 rebounds. Cal had three other players in double figures.

Sacramento State shot 37.1 percent overall on 26-of-70 shooting, including 4-of-18 from 3-point range. The Hornets snagged 37 rebounds, committed 26 turnovers and had just eight assists. They went 5-of-15 at the free throw line.

Cal shot 48.1 percent from the field on 37-of-77 shooting, with 2-of-19 coming from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears grabbed 60 rebounds, were pressured into 22 turnovers and had 19 assists. They went 9-of-25 at the free throw line.

Cal had a 26-14 edge in second-chance points and had 30 points off Sacramento State's turnovers.

Up next for the Hornets is a home game against Long Beach State. Tip time is set for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday at The Nest.
