MEN'S SOCCER CLAIMS MPSF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 2-1 OVERTIME WIN OVER CSUB

11/14/2010

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Rory O'Day scored on a header in overtime, giving the Sacramento State men's soccer team their second-consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament Championship and back-to-back automatic NCAA Men's College Cup bids.

The No. 5 seeded Hornets improve to 10-4-7 on the season after winning the MPSF tournament title while No. 2 seed Cal State Bakersfield falls to 11-6-3 in 2010.

Sacramento State defeated No. 4 seed Air Force, 6-2, on Thursday in the quarterfinals then knocked off No. 1 seed Denver, 3-1, on Friday in the semifinals before upsetting the Roadrunners in the championship match on Sunday.

After sweeping through the tournament on their home field, the Hornets have now gone unbeaten in 20 straight games at Hornet Soccer Field.

Chris Bettencourt, who was named tournament MVP, put the Hornets on the board when he scored his fourth goal of the tournament and 10th of the season in the ninth minute of the game to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Bettencourt used a header to put the ball inside the far post after a long throw-in to the box by Max Alvarez.

But just before halftime the Roadrunners would even the score at 1-1 when Chris Widdy found Richard Menjivar for his third goal of the season.

It was scoreless in the second half and an overtime period ensued.

Just over three minutes into the golden goal overtime, Ernesto Carranza bombed a corner kick into the box where a pair of Hornets headed the ball before Matt Linenberger used a header of his own to pop a shot off the crossbar that came back toward O'Day, who used his head to redirect the ball into the back of the net just inside the near post. O'Day tore his shirt off in celebration and sprinted toward the large crowd at Hornet Soccer Field where his teammates mobbed on top of him near the sideline.

The Hornets scored just six goals in 10 MPSF conference games in the regular season but netted 11 goals in three MPSF Tournament games.

Sacramento State will learn its seed in the NCAA Men's College Cup on Monday afternoon, when ESPNU will air the selection show from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
