BOYER RECORDS FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE BUT WOMEN'S HOOPS FALLS TO SHARP-SHOOTING NEVADA
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In Sacramento State’s first return to the Hornets Nest after spending nearly a month on the road, Nevada dealt the Hornets a 75-42 loss on Friday night.Three members of the Wolf Pack (4-3) finished in double figures, led by Traci Graham’s 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, three second-half three-pointers and five steals. Brandi Fitzgerald and Dellena Criner added, 12 points apiece.
For the third consecutive game, sophomore Atty Boyer led the Hornets (1-7) in scoring, recording her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
Nevada held just a nine-point lead, 33-24, entering the second half, but Graham drained all three of her long-distance shots in the first four minutes to give the Wolf Pack a 15-point lead by the 16:51 mark.
In the final 20 minutes, Nevada shot 60.0 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-6 performance from beyond the arc, to build its lead. Sacramento State shot 40.9 percent from the floor (18-of-44) and freshman forward Erika Edwards, in her second career start, finished with eight points and career-best nine rebounds.
For almost the full 40 minutes, Nevada used a full-court press to disrupt Sacramento State’s offense and force the Hornets into a season-high 37 turnovers. The majority of the damage was done in the second half, as Nevada’s defense held the Hornets to just 18 points.
The Wolf Pack scored 40 points off the Hornets’ turnovers and outscored Sacramento State 42-8 in the paint.
Sacramento State next travels to play Causeway-rival UC Davis at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday at the Pavilion with 10 points in the Causeway Cup on the line.
