12/14/2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State senior Atty Boyer (Sacramento, Calif.) posted her third double-double of the season, but the Hornets fell to the San Francisco Dons by a score of 64-55 on Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Hornets Nest.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-7 on the season, while the Dons improve to 3-7.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively to start the contest, as the Hornets held the Dons without a basket for the first 5:51 of the contest. Sacramento State took a 5-0 lead to start on a layup by junior Charday Hunt (Portland, Ore.) and a three-pointer by freshman Alex White (Folsom, Calif.), her first collegiate basket, before Danesha Wright broke the Dons into the scoring column with a three-pointer to make it 5-3. The team's trading the lead on 10 occasions the remainder of the half, with sophomore Sami Field-Polisso (Mountain View, Calif.) hitting a three-pointer with just :03 seconds left in the half to give the Hornets a 24-22 halftime advantage.

Things got physical in the second half, as after a first half that saw just five fouls called and two free throws attempted, both teams were whistled for 13 fouls, and combined to shoot 46 second half free throws. The Hornets were held without a field goal over the first 7:53 of the half, with six made free throws by Boyer serving as the only Hornet points during a 18-6 run over the span for USF, which took a 10 point advantage at 40-30. The Hornets cut the lead to five points at 47-42 with 4:39 remaining on a pair of free throws from junior Erika Edwards (Redmond, Wash.), only to see USF's Shay Rollins come back down the floor and a three-pointer to extend the lead back to eight. With the score 59-50 with :32 seconds remaining, USF center Necolia Simmons was whistled for a technical foul, and the Hornets hit 3-of-4 free throws to pull back to within six, but the Dons would make 5-of-6 free throws over the final :23 seconds to take home a 64-55 victory.

The Dons held the Hornets to their lowest shooting percentage of the year (29.1 percent) while allowing just six second half field goals. Free throw shooting kept Sacramento State in the game, as they hit 18-of-22 (81.8 percent), all in the second half of play, which marked their most makes at the line this season.

Boyer led the Hornets with 15 points, including 11-of-14 shooting from the foul line, and 10 rebounds, while Hunt added 12 points, all of which came during the first half. Sophomore Tika Koshiyama-Diaz (San Jose, Calif.) scored seven points off the bench, while Edwards finished with six points and 10 rebounds, her sixth double-digit rebounding performance of the season.

The Dons were led by Shay Rollins, who was two shy of her career-high with 22 points, while Simmons (14), Rheina Ale (13) and Wright (12) each finished in double figures.

The Hornets are next in action on Saturday, Dec. 20 as they take on Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. PT.
