DES MOINES, Iowa - The Sacramento State women's basketball team dropped a 89-52 decision to the Drake Bulldogs on Friday, Nov. 16 at the Knapp Center on the campus of Drake University.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 1-2 on the 2007-08 campaign.
Sacramento State came out with fire, keeping the game close through the games early stages. However, after junior Becca Reams' (Foresthill, Calif.) two free throws pulled the Hornets to within four at 19-15 with 9:53 remaining in the first half, the Bulldogs embarked on a 27-0 run, holding Sacramento State without a field goal for eight minutes and 38 seconds, before taking a 46-20 halftime lead.
The Hornets continued to play hard coming out of intermission, with Hornet junior Atty Boyer (Sacramento, Calif.) scoring the first bucket of the half to attempt to swing momentum back the way of Sacramento State, but it was not to be as the Hornets were outgunned 43-30 the remainder of the half to account for the final score of 89-52.
Sophomore Erika Edwards (Redmond, Wash.) posted a strong evening for the Hornets, coming off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds in 27 minutes of action before fouling out with 8:10 remaining in the contest. Boyer posted team high honors in scoring and rebounding with a near double-double, posting 12 points while collecting nine rebounds in 28 minutes of work. Freshman Jasmine Cannady (Sacramento, Calif.) scored her first to baskets as a Hornet, ending the evening 2-of-5 from the field. Sophomore Ashley Garcia (Antioch, Calif.) excelled off the bench, dishing out a career-high four assists while commiting just one turnover in 12 minutes.
The Bulldogs were led by seniors Jill Martin and Lindsay Whorton, who scored 18 points and 14 points respectively. The Hornets, however, held Whorton, one of the Missouri Valley Conference's best three-point threats to 5-of-14 shooting from the field, including just 2-of-9 behind the three point arc.
Drake shot 42.3 percent from the field (30-71) to the Hornets 37.7 percent (20-53), while the Bulldogs converted on 24-of-32 from the foul stripe. The Bulldogs turned 25 Hornet turnovers into 32 points, while attempting 19 more free throws than the Hornets, converting on 15 additional charity tosses.
