WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO UC DAVIS IN SEASON OPENER

11/11/2007

DAVIS, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's basketball team dropped their season opener to Causeway rival UC Davis by a score of 68-39 on Sunday, Nov. 11 at The Pavilion.

With the loss, the Hornets start the season 0-1, while the Aggies move to 1-0 on the young season.

In the first Division I game for the Hornets six newcomers, an experienced Aggie ball club, who return eight players with starting experience, took control at the opening tip. UC Davis opened the game with a 12-0 run that saw the Aggies force the young Hornets into 10 turnovers before they made their first basket, a baseline jumper by sophomore Erika Edwards (Redmond, Wash.), with 14:22 remaining in the first half.

After a jumper by UC Davis' Genevieve Costello made the score 20-4 with 11:58 remaining, Edwards knocked down a three-pointer to pull the Hornets to within 13. But, that was as close as the Hornets would get during the remainder of the game.

UC Davis took a 35-15 lead into the locker room, after a first half that saw the Aggies outshoot the Hornets 52.0 percent to 24.0 percent.

In the second half, the Hornets increased their field goal percentage up to 33.3 percent for the half, but the Aggies only cooled off to 39.3% in the second half, pushing the lead to as many as 33 points on three occasions in the half.

Junior Atty Boyer (Sacramento, Calif.) was a bright spot off the Hornet bench, leading the way with eight points and seven rebounds before fouling out in 15 minutes of action. Boyer was 2-of-3 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line.Edwards ended the contest with seven points and four rebounds, while sophomores Ashley Garcia (Antioch, Calif.) and Darla Bishop (Fairfield, Calif.) added five points apiece.

For the contest, UC Davis shot 45.3 percent on 24-of-53 shooting, including 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from behind the three-point arc. The Hornets were held to 28.3 percent shooting on 13-of-46 from the field, while connecting on 4-of-18 three-pointers. After not shooting a free throw in last year's encounter, the Hornets went 9-of-15 from the line, while the Aggies connected on 14-of-16 from the charity stripe.

Sacramento State outrebounded the Aggies 37-31, while producing 16 offensive rebounds, but they were only able to produce 11 second chance points off of those caroms.

The Aggies were led by Jessica Campbell, who scored 14 points in 24 minutes of action, while Paige Mintun scored 10 points off of the UC Davis bench.

The Hornets head to the Midwest to take on Drake University on Friday, Nov. 16, in Des Moines, Iowa. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Pacific time, with live audio of the contest available on www.hornetsports.com.
