FOUR PLAYERS SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES AS WOMEN’S HOOPS DEFEATS WOFFORD 71-57

12/20/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Cindy Alldrin led Sacramento State with a season-high 17 points as the Hornets defeated Wofford 71-57 and maintained their undefeated home record on Tuesday night at the Hornets Nest.

Sacramento State improves to 4-4, its best start since the 1995-96 season, while Wofford falls to 4-5.

In addition to leading the team in scoring, Alldrin added a season-high six assists and five rebounds to help the Hornets maintain their 4-0 record at the Nest. Senior forward Ashley Cadotte added a career-high 16 points and also dished out a career-high five assists and a career-high tying four steals.

Spurred by a quick six points from Alldrin, Sacramento State opened the game on a 12-0 run and held the Terriers scoreless until the 15:49 mark. While Wofford never gained a lead during the game, the Terriers were able to tie things up at 16-16 with 9:11 to go until the break. But a three-pointer from senior forward Lindsey Heard and two quick baskets from Cadotte helped the Hornets rebuild their lead and take a 29-25 lead into halftime.

Both teams were careless with basketball combining for 53 turnovers, including a season-high 29 committed by the Hornets. But Sacramento State countered Wofford’s full-court pressure with nearly flawless free-throw shooting. The Hornets shot a season-best 91.3 percent (21-of-23) from the free-throw line, with Cadotte going a perfect 8-for-8, Alldrin going 6-for-6 and junior guard Stephanie Cherry going 6-for-7.

Cherry, a Suisun, Calif., native also finished in double figures with 14 points, while adding a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. It was the second time this season the 5-foot-6 guard has led the team in rebounding, now averaging 5.3 boards per game.

In the second half, Sacramento State wasted little time building a double-digit lead, never allowing Wofford to cut its deficit to more than eight points after the 10:24 mark. The Hornets’ largest lead of the second half, 59-42, came after Cherry made three consecutive free throws.

Kelsi Koenig led Wofford with a career-high 21 points and Nakia Mister added 14 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Terriers.

The Hornets 17 free-throw attempts in the second half, combined with their potency from beyond the arc, helped maintain the double-digit lead.

Led by junior guard Kim Sheehy’s 12 points and 4-of-7 shooting from the three-point line, Sacramento State shot 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. It was the fourth time this season the Santa Fe, N.M., native has knocked down at least three treys in a game and the 14th consecutive game she has scored at least one three-pointer.

Sacramento State hosts Pacific at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday in its final home game before a three-game road trip, looking to extend its 4-0 record at the Hornets Nest.
