WOMEN’S HOOPS FALLS IN OVERTIME DESPITE THREE PLAYERS SCORING IN DOUBLE FIGURES

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Idaho State defeated Sacramento State, 70-67, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Hornets Nest, despite sophomore guard Stephanie Cherry and junior forward Ashley Cadotte both recording double-doubles.

Senior guard Tyeisha Brown led the Hornets with 20 points plus eight rebounds in 44 minutes on the floor. The Vallejo, Calif. native has now led the team in scoring 11 times this season and 25 times in her two-year career. Cherry added 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, recording her first career double-double. Cadotte scored a career-high 14 points and added a career-high tying 11 rebounds. She was also 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. For the Vancouver, Wash., native it was the second double-double of her career and the 14th time she has led the team in rebounding.

The game was tied at 58-58 with just seconds left to go in regulation, when Brown drove to the basket and sank a layup, giving the Hornets a 60-58 edge with 3.8 seconds to go. On Idaho State’s following possession, Camile Michaelson hit a jumper from the free-throw line as time expired and sending the game into overtime tied at 60-60.

In overtime, the Hornets took a four-point lead, 64-60, on two buckets from Brown and junior forward Lindsey Heard, but free throws from Molly Hays and a layup by Christa Brossman, gave the Bengals a 68-67 lead with 21 seconds remaining in the overtime period. Hays, who finished with a game-high 23 points, sank two more free throws with nine seconds left to seal the Bengals’ victory. She was 13-of-15 from the charity stripe for the game.

Sacramento State falls to 7-15 overall and 3-6 in the Big Sky, still holding onto the sixth and final spot for the postseason conference tournament with five games remaining until the end of the regular season. Idaho State improves to 9-13 and 4-5 in conference, moving itself into fifth place in the Big Sky.

The Hornets have now played four games in overtime on the season, and the loss to the Bengals was the first time Sacramento State had been defeated in overtime this year. Three of Sacramento State’s overtime games have been conference games.

As a team, the Hornets had a season-high tying 48 rebounds, outrebounding the Bengals by eight. Also scoring in double figures for Idaho State was Brossman with 18 points and Michaelson with 13.

Sacramento State senior forward Kristine Knowlton scored a season-high eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, while sophomore guard Kim Sheehy’s 14-game three-point streak came to an end as the Santa Fe, N.M. native was 0-of-4 from behind the arc. Sheehy finished with six points and three assists. Cherry, who had her nine-game streak with at least one three-pointer ended against Weber State, returned to form shooting 3-of-7 from behind the arc while dishing out three assists.

In the first half, the game had a combined nine ties and lead changes, with Idaho State pulling away at the end of the first period, outscoring the Hornets 9-5 in the final 3:00 of the half, making the score 31-24 at the break.

In the second half Idaho State increased its lead to 34-24 within the first minute of play, before the Hornets went on a 12-1 run that gave Sacramento State a 36-35 lead with 13:47 left in the game. During that run the Bengals were 0-of-6 from the floor and also committed two turnovers, while Sacramento State scored on six of its nine possessions in that time frame, led by five points from Cadotte.

The lead would change hands eight times, until Sacramento State began to creep away with a 49-44 lead with 7:04 left in regulation. The Hornets extended their lead to their biggest of the game, 56-48, with 2:31 left in the game. But on its final six possessions, Sacramento State scored only two free throws until Brown’s go-ahead layup. Conversely, the Bengals scored on six of their final eight possessions to send the game into overtime.

Sacramento State will make its final regular season road trip, playing at Montana on Thursday, Feb. 15 and at Montana State on Saturday, Feb. 17, before returning to the Hornets Nest on Feb. 26 for a three-game homestand to close out the regular season.
