CHERRY LEADS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WITH 16 POINTS AS HORNETS FALL TO WEBER STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State dropped its second Big Sky Conference game of the season, 66-49, to Weber State at the Dee Events Center on Saturday night.

The Hornets (4-10, 0-2) were led by sophomore guard Stephanie Cherry’s game-high 16 points in her 22 minutes on the court. The Suisun, Calif. native scored a career-high four three-pointers in the second half and added a career-high tying four steals.

For the second-straight game, senior guard Tyeisha Brown also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points (nine in the first half), dishing out three assists and collecting two steals.

The first half saw eight lead changes and ties, with the Hornets jumping out to a 24-17 lead on a jumper from Cherry with 6:28 remaining in the first half. The seven-point lead was sparked by Brown, who scored nine points in a five-minute span leading up to the Hornets’ biggest lead of the game.

The Wildcats finished out the half on an 11-2 run, sparked by Shelia Robertson, who hit three three-pointers in the final five minutes of the half to give the Wildcats a 28-26 lead at the half. The Hornets have yet to lead at halftime this season.

After shooting 37.9 percent from the field in the first half, Sacramento State struggled to find that same consistency in the second half, shooting 22.2 percent (6-of-27) in the final 20 minutes.

The Wildcats had better success from the floor in the second half, shooting 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the floor. Weber State had five players finish in double figures, led by Beck O’Neil and Chelsey Warburton, who scored 14 points apiece. Julie Gjertsen, the Big Sky’s leading scorer averaging 17.9 points per game, finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals in 37 minutes.

In the second half the Hornets failed to get on the board until the 15:34 mark with a free throw from Brown, allowing Weber State to make a 9-0 run until that point. The Wildcats then continued to pull away, taking a 42-29 lead with 13:32 remaining.

The Hornets committed 13 turnovers, while forcing the Wildcats into 16, but Sacramento State dished out only eight assists compared to Weber State’s 17.

Sacramento State tied a season high with five blocks, led by senior forward Kristine Knowlton’s season-high three. She is first all-time in Hornet Division I history with 145 career blocks.

The Hornets were outrebounded 41-29, with Weber State’s Brooke Hansen matching Gjertsen’s 10 rebounds while adding 12 points. Junior forward Katelyn Ciampi led Sacramento State in rebounding for the sixth time this season finishing with seven. She also added a block to her season total of 13.

The Hornets will return to the Nest for a two-game homestand, playing Montana State at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night and playing Montana at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday.
