BROWN AND CIAMPI SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES AS WOMEN’S HOOPS FALLS IN BIG SKY OPENER

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Sacramento State women''s basketball team dropped its opening Big Sky Conference game to Idaho State, 63-57, Thursday night at Reed Gym in Pocatello, Idaho.

The Hornets (4-9, 0-1) were led by senior guard Tyeisha Brown and junior forward Katelyn Ciampi, who scored 10 points apiece. For Brown it was the sixth time this season the Vallejo, Calif. native has led or shared the team-lead in scoring. She also had a career-high tying and season-best eight rebounds along with four assists.

Ciampi has now scored in double figures five time this season and the Martinez, Calif., native fell just short of a double-double with a team-high tying eight rebounds. She also had two blocks in the game, improving her season total to a team-high 12.

Sacramento State nailed a season-high eight three-pointers as a team, shooting 32.0 percent (8-of-25) from behind the arc, with sophomore guard Kim Sheehy, junior guard Cindy Alldrin and junior forward Lindsey Heard all hitting two three-pointers apiece.

The teams combined to launch 48 three-pointers, with the Bengals shooting 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from behind the arc.

For only the third time this season, Sacramento State scored first with a jumper from Ciampi, en route to a 10-7 lead with 14:58 remaining in the first half. Of the Hornets first 10 points, eight came from Ciampi at the start of the game. She finished the evening 5-of-8 from the field.

Idaho State (6-8, 1-0) mounted a comeback, led by Camille Michaelson, who scored a game-high 19 points and dished out five assists in 38 minutes. The Big Sky Conference’s second leading scorer, Molly Hays, who had been averaging 14.5 points per game, was held to six by the Hornet defense. Sacramento State also had 11 steals, but turned the ball over 20 times.

The Bengals took their biggest lead of the first half, 20-12, with a jumper from Natalia Doma with 9:06 left in the first period. The Hornets closed the score to 28-23 at the half with two free throws from Sheehy.

Idaho State went on to build a 19-point lead, 54-35 in the second half, but the Hornets cut the lead to nine, 56-47, with 3:15 left in the game.

Idaho State’s Natalia Doma finished the game with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while India Soo added 13 points.

The Hornets outrebounded the Bengals 37-35, including 12 offensive rebounds, but shot 36.1 percent from the floor (22-of-61) compared to Idaho State, who shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the floor.

The Hornets also improved upon their free-throw shooting, going into the game at 59.5 percent, and sinking 5-of-6 attempts (83.3 percent), Thursday evening.

Heard, Alldrin and Sheehy all finished the game with eight points apiece, while Alldrin dished out four assists as well.

Sacramento State will complete its road trip at Weber State (10-4, 1-0) on Saturday night with a 6:05 p.m. PST tipoff.
