Spokane, Wash.- Sacramento State fell to Gonzaga, 71-56, Monday night at the MacCarthey Athletic Center, despite outscoring the Bulldogs 41-34 in the second half.The Hornets (4-7) were led by junior forward Katelyn Ciampi and senior guard Tyeisha Brown, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the only Hornets to finish in double figures.
For Ciampi, the 12 points were a season high and it was the first time this season she has led the team in scoring, but the ninth time in her career. The Martinez, Calif., native scored all of her 12 points in the second half and went 5-of-10 from the field finishing the game with five rebounds (three offensive), two assists and one block.
Brown, a Vallejo, Calif., native went 5-of-14 from the field, adding a game-high tying four steals, including three in the second half. Sophomore guard Stephanie Cherry also had three of her four steals in the final 20 minutes, while bringing down five rebounds in the second half.
Sacramento State had a game-high 12 steals, eclipsing its average of 11.8 per game. The Hornets also forced Gonzaga into 18 turnovers, while Sacramento State committed 17.
Down 65-36 with 7:20 remaining in the game, the Hornets went on a 20-6 run to close out the game, with Ciampi scoring nine of her points in that time frame and Brown adding four points and two steals.
The Bulldogs, who now improve to 11-2, were led by senior forward Ashley Burke, who scored a game-high 17 points. Also in double figures was Dominique Harris with 11 and Anne Bailey with 10. Burke and Bailey, both over 6 feet, were a big part of Gonzaga outscoring the Hornets 30-18 in the paint.
Sacramento State did hussle for 13 offensive rebounds, outscoring the Bulldogs 16-6 on second-chance points.
Junior forward Lindsey Heard led the Hornets on the board with six rebounds, but the Bulldogs were to strong outrebounding Sacramento State 41-37. It was the ninth time this season the Hornets have been outrebounded.
Sacramento State shot 37.7 percent from the floor, but were deadly in the second half, shooting 53.3 percent (16-of-30), including sinking four of its five made three-pointers in the final 20 minutes, with sophomore guard Kim Sheehy tallying a game-high two and Ciampi, Heard and junior guard Cindy Alldrin all nailing one apiece.
Sacramento State never had a lead in the game, going down 8-0 early, before Alldrin broke the scoring drought with a jumper at the 13:24 mark.
At the end of the first half, the Bulldogs had mounted a 37-15 lead with Burke scoring 11 points and grabbing three rebounds (two offensive). Sacramento State turned the ball over nine times, resulting in 10 Gonzaga points, while the Hornets scored only four points off the Bulldogs’ nine turnovers.
Alldrin led the Hornets in the first 20 minutes with seven points, four rebounds and one assist and finished the game with nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Bulldogs also shot 51.1 percent from the floor in the first period, while Sacramento State struggled shooting 22.6 percent from the floor.
Notes: Freshman point guard Ali Mollet made her first collegiate start…Ciampi scored a season-high 12 points and made the fourth three-pointer of her career...the Hornets shot 38.5 percent from the free-throw line (5-of-13).
