SACRAMENTO, Calif. - With less than three seconds left in overtime, junior guard Cindy Alldrin nailed a five-foot jumper to give Sacramento State a 70-68 overtime win over UC Irvine at the Bren Center on Tuesday night.Alldrin, who sank only three three-pointers in her first seven games this season, hit two critical shots outside the arc in overtime on consecutive possessions, giving Sacramento State a 68-65 lead with 57 seconds left in the game.
The Anteaters’ Melissa Jacob answered with a three-pointer of her own knotting the score at 68-68 with 13 seconds left on the clock. It served as ample time for Alldrin, who scored the game-winner after a Hornet time-out. Alldrin scored eight of the Hornets’ 10 overtime points on three consecutive possessions.
The Vancouver, Wash., native is now averaging 8.3 points per game after scoring a career-high 14 points against UC Irvine. She also added eight rebounds and a team-high seven assists, a single game best for any Hornet this season.
For the first time this season Sacramento State, who now improves to 3-5, had five payers finish in double figures, led by junior forward Lindsey Heard. The Roseburg, Ore., native scored a career-high 15 points, knocking down 3-of-4 three-point attempts. Heard, a Kodak All-American Nominee at Umpqua Community College last year, scored 11 of her points and all of her three-pointers in the second half.
Junior forward Ashley Cadotte fell just short of posting a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. It is the fourth time this season Cadotte has finished in double figure scoring. Also finishing in double figures for the third-straight game was junior forward Katelyn Ciampi. Ciampi has scored 10 points in Sacramento State’s last three games and Tuesday night she added four rebounds and one assist in a career-high tying 36 minutes.
Also scoring in double figures for the third time this season was sophomore guard Kim Sheehy. Sheehy hit two three-pointers and also came down with four rebounds. Senior guard Tyeisha Brown, who leads the team scoring 11.8 points per game, did most of her work on the defensive end, finishing with a game-high five steals.
Sacramento State, who had been shooting .212 from behind the arc, shot a season-best 47 percent (7-of-15) from three-point land against the Anteaters, now 0-7. The Hornets continue their struggles from the charity stripe, hitting just 7-of-15 free-throw attempts, sinking their season percentage to .606.
The Hornets continued their early game struggles, going down 9-0 early before taking the lead at 24-22 with 4:28 left to play in the first half. The massive run was sparked by a team effort with Alldrin, Ciampi, Heard and freshman guard Ali Mollet scoring four points apiece during the first half run.
In the second half the Hornets overcame a 12-point deficit and went on a four-minute 13-2 run to tie the game at 53-53 with 4:46 left in the second half. Sacramento State continued its run, taking a 60-53 lead with just over two minutes left in the second half, before a three-pointer from UC Irvine’s Angie Ned with six seconds left on the clock tied the game at 60- 60 and sent it into overtime.
Notes: The win improves the Hornets to 3-5, their best record in their first eight games since the 1995-96 season. The win also beaks a nine-game road losing streak dating back to last season. It is the first time Sacramento State has won an overtime game since a 91-84 win over San Diego on Jan. 4, 1998. The three wins over Division I teams is the first time since the 2000-01 season that the team has defeated three Div. I opponents. The Hornets have not defeated three Div. I teams so early on in the season, since the 1993-94 season, when the team had three wins over Div. I opponents in its first five games.
