CHERRY AND BROWN LEAD WOMEN’S HOOPS TO 83-76 VICTORY OVER OHIO

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women’s basketball team won its second game of the season, 83-76, in an offensive explosion over Ohio, Wednesday night at the Hornets Nest.

Sophomore guard Stephanie Cherry led all scorers, with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting, including knocking down three 3-pointers. The Fairfield High School graduate also snagged a career-high four steals, and is now second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.3 points per game. It is also the second time this season and the fifth time in her career, Cherry has led the team in scoring.

The up-tempo game, forced a combined 64 turnovers with Sacramento State forcing the Bobcats (2-4) into 35 turnovers. The Hornets, now 2-4 and off to their best start since the 1999-2000 season, committed 29 turnovers against Ohio’s constant full-court pressure, but created 16 steals of their own, which is a season high.

Senior guard Tyeisha Brown, was just two points shy of her career-high, scoring a season-high 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting, while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists. The Vallejo, Calif., native continues to lead the squad with 13.7 points per game.

It was the third time this season Sacramento State has had at least three scorers finish in double figure scoring, with junior forward Katelyn Ciampi scoring a season-high 10 points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and a career-high four assists.

The Bobcats finished with four player’s in double figures, led by center Ciara Iglehart’s 13 points. Ohio committed 27 personal fouls, sending the Hornets to the line 33 times.

In 33 minutes on the floor, junior forward Ashley Cadotte scored nine points while grabbing 10 rebounds. It is the second time this season, the Oregon City, Ore., native has finished with double figure rebounds and the fourth time this season Cadotte has led the Hornets in rebounds, now averaging 8.0 per game. Cadotte also added a career-high four assists.

The Bobcats had their largest lead of the game, 40-28, with just over three minutes left in the first half, before a 12-3 run, with six points from Brown, narrowed the Bobcats halftime lead to 43-40.

In the second half, Sacramento State came back from a five-point deficit with 7:21 left in the game to take the lead for good on lay-up from Cadotte with 2:34 to go. Cherry sunk two three-pointers in those final minutes to seal the victory.

It was the first time this season the Hornets have eclipsed the 70-point mark, with a season-high in field goals made (32), field goals attempted (70) and assists (21).

In head coach Dan Muscatell''s third career win with the Hornets, the team shot a season-high 46 percent from the floor.

It is the first time since a 89-83 win over UC Riverside on Jan. 20, 2001 that the Hornets have scored at least 80 points in a game. It is also the first time since the 2000-01 season that Sacramento State had at least two wins over Division I opponents in a season and the first time the Hornets have had two wins over Div. I opponents in their first six games since the 1995-96 season.
