WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SAN JOSE STATE IN SEASON OPENER

The Sacramento State women’s basketball team dropped its season opener in a 59-46 loss to San Jose State on Friday night at The Events Center.

The Spartans took a 30-21 lead at the half, shooting 48 percent from the floor during the first 20 minutes.

The Hornets struggled from the floor, shooting 36.4 percent (16-of-44) for the game, but were led by senior guard Tyeisha Brown.

Brown, last season’s leading scorer, came off the bench to provide a team-high 14 points and at 5-foot-8, also led the team with seven rebounds.

The Spartans were led by center Nica Gemo, who shot 8-for-10 from the floor for a game-high 17 points.

Sacramento State newcomers, guard Cindy Alldrin and center Ashley Cadotte, who played last season for NWAACC champions Clackamas CC in Oregon City, Ore., also contributed.

Alldrin finished the game with eight points and five steals, while Cadotte had an all-around performance with five points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Four other Hornets also made their debut in Sacramento State uniforms in the loss; junior guard Lindsay Calmettes, junior forward Lindsey Heard, sophomore guard Kim Sheehy, and freshman guard Ali Mollet.

San Jose State outrebounded Sacramento State 36-28 and also forced the Hornets to commit 30 turnovers, compared to the Spartans’ 24.

Sacramento State returns to the Hornets Nest for its home opener on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2:05 p.m. against UC Riverside.
