Senior Danielle Iceman tallied a team-high 14 points but San Jose State shot 53.6 percent from the field (30-for-56) as the Spartans defeated the Sacramento State women’s basketball team, 70-39, Tuesday evening at the Hornets Nest. Sacramento State is now 0-8 on the year while San Jose State improved to 4-1.
Iceman, a native of Redding, Calif., was the only Hornet to score in double figures after going 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line. With her four free throws, Iceman moved into seventh place in the Hornet record book with 186 career free throws made. The center bounced back from consecutive games without a basket last weekend at the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic in Manhattan, Kan.
Tatiana Taylor led the Spartans with a game-high 23 points after going 11-of-14 from the field and 1-of-4 from the charity stripe. Cricket Williams finished with a contest-high 15 assists and seven rebounds.
In the first half, San Jose State used a 13-1 run to open the game and led by as many as 25 (31-6) at the 4:19 mark. Sacramento State ended the half with an 8-3 run to make it 34-14 at the break. The Spartans finished the half shooting 53.8 percent from the floor (14-of-26) while holding the Hornets to only 15.4 percent shooting (4-for-26).
In the second half, Sacramento State cut the deficit to 19 (41-22) at the 15:32 mark but San Jose State used a 15-0 run to give the Spartans their largest lead of the contest (56-22) with 10:14 remaining. The Hornets never broke the 30 point margin for the remainder of the game.
Overall, Sacramento State went 12-for-51 (.235) from the floor while San Jose State ended the contest shooting 30-for-56 (.536). The Hornets also finished 15-for-27 (.556) from the free-throw line compared to the Spartans 8-for-17 (.471) effort.
Sacramento State will next travel to Nevada to face the Wolf Pack on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Lawlor Events Center. The Hornets’ next home contest will be a week later on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m. against UC Irvine. The game will be the first of a scheduled doubleheader with the men’s basketball team at the Hornets Nest.
