WOMEN'S HOOPS SCORES 41 SECOND-HALF POINTS IN LOSS TO NAU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Three Hornets finished with double-figures in scoring en route to a season-high 41 second-half points but the Sacramento State women’s basketball team fell to Northern Arizona, 78-61, Saturday evening at Walkup Skydome. The game marked the end of the 2003-04 season for the Hornets and the program’s first year under head coach Dan Muscatell.

Sacramento State ends the year with a 1-26 overall record and a 1-13 mark in the Big Sky Conference while Northern Arizona improved to 12-15, 5-9.

Freshman Stephanie Cherry led the Hornets with a season-high 16 points after finishing 5-of-8 from the field, 2-of-5 from the three-point line and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. It marked the third time Cherry has led the Hornets in scoring this season and the fourth time the Fairfield, Calif., native has scored in double-figures.

Junior Samania Black (11) and sophomore Sarah Craig (11) also cracked the century mark in points for the Hornets. Black, a native of Inglewood, Calif., was 3-of-5 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. The point guard recorded her third double-digit effort on the year. Craig, a native of Calgary, Alberta, tallied double-figure scoring for the fourth time this season after finishing 4-of-11 from the field. She also tallied a career-high five steals while also dishing out a team-best two assists.

Seniors Cindy Besio, Danielle Iceman and Diane Peterson competed in the final game of their Hornet careers. Iceman finished with four points and a team-high five rebounds.

Lacey Tolbert led Northern Arizona with a game-high 37 points after going 14-of-20 from the field (5-of-7 from behind the arc) and 4-for-5 effort from the free-throw line. Alyssa Wahl (13) also scored in double-figures for the Luberjacks. Alexis Rhoads added a game-high seven assists.

In the first half, NAU jumped out to a 9-3 lead (17:22) before Sacramento State responded with a 13-4 run to gain a 16-13 advantage at the 12:58 mark. The Lumberjacks took control of the contest with an 18-1 run to lead 31-17 (5:24) before leaving the floor with a 39-20 halftime advantage.

In the second half, NAU increased its lead to 46-21(17:06) after two layups by Wahl and a three-point basket by Tolbert. Sacramento State cut the deficit to 47-32 at the 13:36 mark after going on an 11-1 run. NAU pushed the advantage to 62-41 with 8:11 remaining before the Hornets cut the margin down to 14 (70-56) with a 15-8 run (3:13). Tolbert immediately answered with a three-pointer as NAU finished the contest with an 8-5 advantage.

Overall, Sacramento State shot 20-of-47 (.426) from the floor, 4-of-19 (.211) from the three-point line and 17-of-24 (.708) from the charity stripe. NAU shot 53.8 percent from the field (28-52), 43.8 percent from the arc (7-16) and 68.2 percent from the line (15-22).

Sacramento State set a season-high with 41 second-half points while also finishing fourth in Div. I history (1991-present) by allowing its opponents to average 68.0 points-per-game. The Hornets also rank eighth in the Div. I era with a opponents averaging .429 shooting from the field.
