WOMEN'S HOOPS FALLS TO WEBER STATE, 78-47

OGDEN, Utah. -- Sophomore Katelyn Ciampi finished with a team-high 11 points while junior Tyeisha Brown also added 10 as the Sacramento State women’s basketball team fell to Weber State, 78-47, in a Big Sky Conference game Thursday evening at the Dee Events Center.

Sacramento State dropped to 1-22 overall and 1-9 in the Big Sky while Weber State improved to 13-10, 7-3.

Ciampi led the Hornets in scoring for the fifth time this season after shooting 5-of-9 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. The native of Martinez, Calif., also led the squad with seven rebounds and three assists. Ciampi is now second behind Brown (six) for the team lead in high-point games.

Brown finished 4-of-10 from the field including a 2-for-3 effort from behind the three-point line. It marked the ninth time the Vallejo, Calif., native has recorded double figures in scoring. Junior Kristine Knowlton also added a team-high two blocked shots and two steals.

Julie Gjertsen led Weber State with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting (including a 5-for-8 performance from behind the arc) and a 2-for-2 effort from the charity stripe. Gjertsen also added a game-high eight rebounds. Sheila Robertson (14) and Laura Porter (10) also led the Wildcat scoring effort.

As a team, the Hornets finished 9-of-20 (.346) from the floor compared to Weber State’s 21-of-52 (.404) performance. The Hornets were outrebounded by the Wildcats 41-to-31. WSU also dominated the free throw line by converting 25-of-37 (.676) compared to 7-of-9 (.778) by the Hornets.

In the first half, Weber State jumped out to an 8-0 advantage at the 18:23 mark before Sacramento State used a 5-0 run to cut the lead, 8-5, with 16:22 remaining. The Wildcats answered with a 12-0 run (20-5) in the next 4:04. WSU outscored Sacramento State 13-6 in the next 7:01 before building its biggest lead of the half (26), 41-15, with 2:00 remaining. The Hornets used a 7-0 run in the final two minutes to make it 41-22 at halftime.

In the second half, Weber State opened with a 7-0 run (48-22) before outscoring Sacramento State, 23-16, in the next 14:58 to lead by a game-high 33 (71-38) with 4:29 remaining. The Hornets did not get any closer than 29 points for the remainder of the contest.

Sacramento State will next travel to Idaho State on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1:05 p.m. PST.
