WOMEN'S HOOPS FALLS TO EASTERN WASHINGTON, 67-49

Sophomore Katelyn Ciampi scored a team-high 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor but the Sacramento State women’s basketball team fell to Eastern Washington, 67-49, Saturday evening at Reese Court.

The Hornets fell to 1-14 on the year and 1-1 in the Big Sky while the Eagles improved to 9-6, 2-0.

Ciampi, who was the only Hornet to scored in double figures, also finished 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. The Martinez, Calif., native has now led the squad in scoring for the third time and also cracked double-figures for the sixth time this season. Junior Tyeisha Brown added a team-high six rebounds while junior Alison Thurman finished with two blocked shots.

Joanna Chadd led the Eagles with 25 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field (including a 5-of-6 performance from behind the arc) and a 6-for-6 effort from the charity stripe. Julie Page (13) and Kathleen Nygaard (10) also finished with double-figure scoring.

In the first half, the two squads exchanged leads in the first five minutes of the game before the Eagles used a 7-0 run to lead 11-4 at the 13:09 mark. EWU increased their lead to 14 (23-9) with 7:38 remaining before leaving the floor with a 31-20 lead at the half.

In the second frame, Sacramento State cut the lead to 34-26 at the 17:31 mark but could not get below 10 points the rest of the way as the Eagles used a 14-2 run (44-28) to put the game out of reach.

As a team, the Hornets shot 18-for-42 from the field (.429) while the Eagles finished 23-of-63 (.365). EWU (7-16) outshot Sacramento State (3-8) from the three-point line while also holding the rebounding edge 39-29. The Eagles also finished 14-for-17 from the free-throw line compared to the Hornets’ 10-for-16 performance.

Sacramento State will host its Big Sky opener against Idaho State on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7:05 p.m. before concluding the week with Weber State on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 7:05 p.m.
