Senior Diane Peterson tallied a team-high 12 points and senior Danielle Iceman recorded her second double-double of the season but the Hornets could not overcome a late surge by Nevada as the Sacramento State women’s basketball team fell to the Wolf Pack, 65-55, Saturday afternoon at the Lawlor Events Center.The Hornets dropped to 0-9 on the year while the Wolf Pack improved to 1-6.
Peterson led the Hornets in scoring for the second time this season after shooting 5-of-8 from the floor, including a 2-for-5 effort from behind the three-point line. The native of San Rafael, Calif., currently leads the squad with 11 three pointers this season and ranks eighth in the Hornet career record book with 54. She needs only four more three’s to move into seventh place all time.
Iceman, a native of Redding, Calif., tallied her team-high second double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Her first double-double came against Cal Poly (15 points, 10 rebounds) on Nov. 21. It marked the second-consecutive game that Iceman cracked the century mark in points after being held scoreless for consecutive games for the first time in her Hornet career.
April Bankston led Nevada with 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting while also leading the squad with eight rebounds. Jocelyn Mancebo (15) and Traci Graham (12) also scored in double figures for the Wolf Pack.
As a team, the Hornets finished 22-of-51 (.431) from the floor compared to Nevada’s 24-for-56 (.429) performance. The Hornets also out-rebounded the Wolf Pack by a margin of 39-to-33. Nevada did win at the free-throw line by converting 11-of-15 (.733) compared to 7-of-19 (.368) by the Hornets.
In the first half, Nevada jumped out to an early 12-5 advantage at the 13:49 mark. Sacramento State used a 14-7 run to cut the deficit to 19-18 with 9:26 remaining. The Wolf Pack increased their lead back to five points (26-21) at the 6:47 mark before the Hornets evened the score (28-28) with 5:05 remaining on a jumper by freshman Jessica Voisard. Nevada regained the lead (32-31) at the 1:05 mark but junior Tyeisha Brown nailed a mid-range jumper with two seconds remaining to give the Hornets’ a 33-32 halftime advantage. It marked the first time this season that Sacramento State held a lead at the break.
In the second half, both teams went through three ties and six lead changes until Peterson’s jumper gave the Hornets their biggest lead of the contest (48-43) at the 8:39 mark. Three ties later, Graham’s three-pointer gave Nevada the lead for good (56-53) with 4:05 remaining. The Wolf Pack would use a 9-2 run in the final four minutes to seal the game.
Sacramento State will take a week off before returning to the Hornets Nest on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m. to take on UC Irvine. The game will be the first of a scheduled doubleheader with the men’s basketball team. Former Hornet women’s basketball standout Kristy Ryan will have her #21 jersey honored during the doubleheader.
