12/5/2003

Junior Tyeisha Brown led the Hornets with a team-high 11 points but the Sacramento State women''s basketball team could not overcome a versatile Kansas State offense as the 12-ranked Wildcats defeated the Sacramento State women''s basketball team, 94-31, Friday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum.

The contest marked the opening round game for both schools in the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic. Saint Louis opened the tournament with a 77-45 win over Texas-Pan American.

The Hornets are now 0-6 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 4-2.

Brown, a native of Vallejo, Calif., was the only Hornet to score in double figures after finishing 4-of-11 from the field (including her first three-point field goal of the season) and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Brown, who led the Hornets with a season-high 18 points against Santa Clara, is now the only member of the squad to lead the team in scoring on more than one occasion.

Kendra Wecker and Laurie Koehn led the Kansas State offense with 20 points apiece. Brie Madden and Nicole Ohlde (12 points apiece) also finished with double-figure scoring. Wecker also added a game-high 16 rebounds.

As a team, Sacramento State finished 12-of-55 (.218) from the floor while Kansas State shot 37-73 (.507). The Wildcats also held the advantage from the free-throw line (12-of-16, 3-of-5) in the contest.

Sacramento State will next face Texas-Pan American on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. PST in Bramlage Coliseum. The Hornets'' next home game will against San Jose State on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 7:05 p.m. in the Hornets Nest.
