SENIORS COMBINE FOR 47 POINTS AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TAKES DOWN WASHINGTON 74-71
11/29/2009
SEATTLE - Sacramento State seniors Erika Edwards (Redmond, Wash.), Ashley Garcia (Antioch, Calif.) and Charday Hunt (Portland, Ore.) combined for 47 points, as the women's basketball team posted its first Div. I-era victory over a Pac-10 foe, defeating Washington 74-71.
With the win, the Hornets, who joined the Div. I ranks in 1991-92, improved to 2-4 on the season, while Washington falls to 2-3.
Trailing 55-54 with 11:38 remaining, the Hornets outscored the Huskies 17-6 over the next 8:08 to take their largest lead of the game at 71-61. During the run, the Hornets got a pair of three-pointers from Edwards, a three-pointer from Garcia, six points from Hunt, and a layup from junior Jasmine Cannady (Sacramento, Calif.).
Trailing 73-63 with 2:54 remaining, the Huskies climbed back in it as Kristi Kingma hit back-to-back three-points and Sara Mosiman knocked down a runner in the paint to pull the deficit to within two at 73-71. Garcia went to the foul line and hit the front end of a 1-and-1, giving Sacramento State a three point lead. Washington had two chances to tie it, as Sami Whitcomb's three-point attempt with eight seconds was blocked out of bounds by Cannady, and Mosiman's desperation heave was no good with two seconds remaining, giving the Hornets their first ever victory in 10 tries over a Pac-10 opponent.
"I am absolutely in awe of what this group came out and did today," head coach Jamie Craighead said following the win. "I knew we had it in us, but I'm not sure if they did. They were willing to give me an effort for 40 minutes, and it took all 40 minutes for us to get the win."
Hunt led the Hornets with 19 points, knocking down 6-of-14 shots from the field and 7-of-8 attempts from the foul line. Edwards continued her hot shooting from the field, going 6-of-9 overall, including 5-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc, for 17 points, while adding seven rebounds. Garcia provided a career-high 11 points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, which included 2-of-2 on three-point field goal attempts and 1-of-3 shooting from the charity stripe.
"We got huge performances from our seniors, Erika (Edwards) hit shot after shot when it mattered down the stretch, Garcia scored her career-high and Hunt drew fouls and knocked down her foul shots," Craighead said. "I also thought we had some huge contributions from players who came off the bench and played solid defense. Both Karri Gallagher and Natasha Torgerson stepped up and played really well."
Washington was led by Whitcomb who scored 21 points, while Regina Rogers added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Sacramento State returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 as they travel to Reno to take on the Nevada Wolf Pack. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:05 p.m., with the game broadcast live on www.hornetsports.com, beginning with the coach Jamie Craighead show at 11:50 a.m.
