MUSCATELL'S CONTRACT EXTENDED THROUGH 2009-10 SEASON

5/30/2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State head women’s basketball coach Dan Muscatell was given a one-year contract extension through the 2009-10 season, as announced today by Director of Athletics Terry Wanless.

In five seasons with the Hornets, Muscatell has led the program to its two winningest campaigns since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97. During the 2007-08 season, the Hornets posted the most conference road victories in school history.

Muscatell has coached six all-Big Sky performers, including two first team selections, while his team has earned 24 conference all-academic honors. Twenty of the 21 student-athletes who have completed their senior seasons under Muscatell have graduated.

“I am thankful to have the support of the athletic director and department in granting me this extension,” Muscatell said. “We are in a place now to become a contender in the Big Sky Conference for years to come.”

Last month, the program received an Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Award from the NCAA, which honored teams that posted multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Only two of the 34 women’s basketball teams honored, Sacramento State and Stanford, hail from the state of California.

“Coach Muscatell continues to make strides in building our women’s basketball program,” Wanless said. “The team achieved one of the highest academic honors in the nation this past year. I am confident we have a coach who will bring us success on the floor as well.”

The Hornets open the 2008-09 season with an exhibition game on November 7 at the Hornets Nest.
