WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ADDS KOSHIYAMA-DIAZ FOR 2007-08; MOLLET TO REDSHIRT
9/11/2007
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State women's basketball coach Dan Muscatell today announced the addition of freshman guard Tika Koshiyama-Diaz to the 2007-08 roster, as well as the fact that senior guard Ali Mollet will redshirt the season while rehabbing from an offseason surgery.
Koshiyama-Diaz comes to the Hornets from Pinewood HS in Los Altos Hills, Calif., where she earned four varsity letters for coach Doc Scheppler. Koshiyama-Diaz, who teamed with fellow Hornet freshman Sami Field-Polisso, averaged 9.5 points, 7.0 assists and 2.8 steals per game during her senior campaign, earning her first team all-Private School Athletic League honors.
"Tika brings an advanced and well-rounded game with her to Sacramento State," Muscatell said. "She has a combination of athleticism, skill, and intelligence that will fit very well in our program."
Originally a walk-on candidate, Koshhiyama-Diaz will be on scholarship for the Hornets this season.
"Her original decision to come and walk-on speaks highly of her desire to play Division I basketball," Muscatell said. "I'm pleased we were able to bring her to the level of a scholarship student-athlete."
The combination of Koshiyama-Diaz and Field-Polisso led Pinewood to back-to-back CIF Division V state championships in 2004-05 and 2005-06. The past three seasons, the duo led the Panthers to the PSAL title, as well as the CIF Division V Central-Coast Section championship.
Mollet, who was limited to eight games last season due to injury, will be forced to miss the 2007-08 season while rehabbing from surgery.
"I know Ali has worked hard to get back on the court and wants to bring her career to a positive conclusion," Muscatell said. "Unfortunately that will not be able to occur during the 2007-08 season."
