ALLDRIN, CHERRY AND SHEEHY RECEIVE ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE HONORS

3/7/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior guard Cindy Alldrin was named to the Big Sky All-Conference team and junior guards Stephanie Cherry and Kim Sheehy received honorable mention accolades, it was announced today by the league office. The awards were decided following a vote by the league’s eight coaches.

Alldrin, a second-year senior from Clackamas CC, led Sacramento State in scoring this season, averaging 11.2 points per game.

The Vancouver, Wash., native led the team in scoring on 12 occasions and also shot a team-leading 86.7 percent (85-of-98) from the free-throw line, ranking her third in the Big Sky and tied for 21st in the nation.

Her percentage also ranks second in school single season history and her 81.3 career percentage (140-of-172) ranks second all-time at Sacramento State. Alldrin started all 26 games for the Hornets this season, and her ability to get to the line helped her to score in double figures a team-leading 16 times.

The 2001 Mountain View High School graduate, averaged 4.8 rebounds per game (third on the team) and 2.4 assists per game (second on the team), while also recording a career-high 22 points at Portland State on March 2. The 5-foot-9 guard turned things up as the season progressed, posting double figures in eight of her last nine games, including her first career double-double with 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in a 70-65 win over Portland State on Feb. 4.

Cherry received honorable mention honors after averaging a career-best 10.6 points and 2.6 assists per game. In her first two seasons with the Hornets, the Suisun, Calif., native played shooting guard, but Cherry took over point guard duties full-time, starting 25 games this year. She led the team dishing out 68 assists and also worked hard on the defensive end of the floor, averaging 4.2 rebounds and a team-leading 2.1 steals per game, ranking her fifth in the conference.

In her third year out of Fairfield High School, Cherry led the team in scoring five times, including three 20-plus point performances. She posted 22 points in a 68-67 overtime victory over Southern Utah on Nov. 26, before adding 22 points in a 57-55 loss to Weber State on Jan. 14. She dropped another 20 points in a 69-61 victory over Eastern Washington on Feb. 2.

Sheehy, last year’s co-Big Sky Newcomer of the Year, was second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.8 points per game. Known for her ability to shoot from beyond the arc, Sheehy knocked down a team-leading 60 three-pointers. The mark ranks second in Hornet single season history, while her 115 career three-pointers rank third all-time. Her 2.31 treys per game also ranked second in the Big Sky.

Sheehy, who led the team in scoring five times this year, was responsible for two game-winning shots. During the Hornets first home game of the season, the Santa Fe, N.M., native scored with two seconds left in a 68-67 overtime victory over Southern Utah. The 5-foot-9 guard then converted a layup with nine seconds remaining in a 61-59 victory over Northern Arizona on Feb. 25.

It is the second consecutive season the Hornets have had a player named to the Big Sky first team, with Sheehy earning the honor a year ago. It is also the first time since joining the conference during the 1996-97 season, that three players have earned all-Big Sky honors.

The Hornets finished their season with a 9-17 overall record and a 4-10 record in the Big Sky, finishing seventh in the conference standings and falling short of advancing to the postseason tournament. For the second straight season, the Hornets were able to improve their overall record, while also posting the program’s highest win total since the 1995-96 season.

Idaho State’s Andrea Lightfoot was named Big Sky MVP and Newcomer of the Year after leading the Bengals to the regular season conference championship. Montana’s Mandy Morales and Portland State’s Kelsey Kahle shared the Outstanding Freshman award, while Eastern Washington’s Joanna Chadd and Idaho State’s Joanna Hixon shared the Defensive Player of the Year award.
