ALLDRIN, CADOTTE AND CIAMPI POST DOUBLE-DOUBLES IN WOMEN’S HOOPS 70-65 WIN OVER PORTLAND STATE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Three players recorded double-doubles, led by Cindy Alldrin’s 19 points and 13 rebounds, to give Sacramento State its second straight Big Sky Conference victory, 70-65, over Portland State on Saturday afternoon at the Hornets Nest.The Hornets improve to 8-11 on the season, matching their win total from a year ago with seven games remaining on the schedule. The team, now on a two-game winning streak, also improves to 3-4 in the Big Sky. Portland State falls to 8-12 and 2-5 in the Big Sky.
For Alldrin, a Vancouver, Wash., native it was her first career double-double as a Hornet, leading the team with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She was also 5-of-6 from the free-throw line, while dishing out three assists.
Senior forwards Katelyn Ciampi and Ashley Cadotte did their best to dominate in the paint, combining for 26 of Sacramento State’s 50 rebounds. The Hornets’ pulled down 20 offensive boards for second-chance opportunities, outrebounding Portland State 52-30 for the game.
For Cadotte, her 12 points and career-high tying 16 rebounds led the Oregon City, Ore., native to her second double-double of the year and fourth of her career.
Ciampi set new season highs with 14 points and 10 rebounds, marking the fourth double-double of her career.
Similar to Sacramento State’s 69-61 victory over Eastern Washington on Thursday night, the Hornets opened up an early lead, reaching an 18-4 advantage with 15:22 remaining in the first half. The Hornets held the Vikings scoreless for nearly four minutes, mounting a 15-0 run and scoring on seven consecutive possessions.
Portland State used a 17-3 run of its own, led by Heather Arns’ 15 first-half points, to tie the game for the first time at 27-27 with 4:46 remaining. Arns finished with a game-high 22 on 8-of-16 shooting. Also scoring in double figures for the Vikings was Sharon Wahinekapu with 16 points and Brianna Thompson adding 11.
With the game notched 39-39 at halftime, Sacramento State again came out firing taking a 47-41 lead behind baskets from Alldrin and Ciampi with 16:05 left. A Stephanie Cherry three-pointer with 11:14 left gave Sacramento State its largest lead of the second half, 57-45, before the Vikings began to slowly chip away.
Portland State went on a 15-6 run to bring the score within three, 63-60 with five minutes remaining.
The Vikings made things to close for comfort when Wahinekapu’s layup brought the score to 67-65 with just 25 seconds on the clock, but Portland State was forced to foul, sending Alldrin to the line. Shooting 89.4 percent from the line this year, she sank both to give the Hornets a comfortable lead.
Alldrin has now led the team in scoring on seven occasions this season, while Cadotte has led the team in rebounding 12 times.
Two of the top three ranked defensive teams in the Big Sky entering the game, both squads used extensive pressure to fluster their opponents. The Vikings who average 12.2 steals per game came away with just five, while the Hornets, who average 9.6, grabbed seven.
Both teams shot 38.7 percent from the floor, but the Hornets made 26 trips to the free-throw line, converting 17, while the Vikings went 11-of-13 from the stripe.
Sacramento State will begin its second round of conference play at Weber State on Thursday, Feb. 9. The Hornets will return to the Nest to host Montana on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:05 p.m.
Notes: The Hornets are off to their best start since the 1993-94 season... the team holds a 7-2 record on their home floor...junior guard Kim Sheehy has recorded at least one three-pointer in her last 25 games, dating back to last season...in the team’s first 17 games, the Hornets had just one double-double, in the last two games they combined for four.
