SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sophomore guard Kim Sheehy was named co-Big Sky Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the Big Sky Conference, it was announced today. Sheehy helped lead Sacramento State to its first Big Sky series sweep on the road in program history. The Hornets are now 7-13 overall and 3-4 in conference. The team’s overall record is its best since the 1995-96 season and the Hornets’ three Big Sky wins are the most since the 1999-00 season. The team is also off to its best Big Sky start since the 1993-94 season.
Sheehy averaged 16.0 points per game in Sacramento State’s two conference road wins last week, including a team and career-high 21 at Eastern Washington in a 72-68 overtime victory.
In the game against the Eagles, the Santa Fe, N.M. native played 41 minutes, sinking three three-pointers including two in overtime. Her biggest bucket of the game came with 11 seconds left in the contest, when the 5-foot-9 guard knocked down in a 25-foot trey to give Sacramento its final lead of the game. She also hit another three-pointer with just over a minute left in overtime, helping Sacramento State to shoot 4-of-4 from the floor in the extra session.
She now leads the conference, scoring at least one three-pointer in 13-straight games, and after seven conference games, Sheehy ranks second in the Big Sky, with 2.29 three-pointers per game.
Against Portland State, Sheehy scored 11 points and knocked down another three three-pointers, while adding one rebound, one assist and two steals.
This is Sheehy’s first time winning Big Sky Player of the Week honors and she is the first Hornet this season to be given the honor. Last year, Sheehy redshirted after transferring from San Jose State.
She is currently second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.5 points per game. For the season, Sheehy leads the team with 36 made three-pointers and the St. Michaels HS graduate is also shooting 35.6 percent from behind the arc. She is also averaging a team-best 30.0 minutes per game.
