LUMBERJACKS STRONG SECOND HALF HELPS THEM TO WIN OVER WOMEN’S HOOPS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Northern Arizona produced a 40-point second half en route to a 55-49 Big Sky Conference win over Sacramento State, Saturday night at the Walkup Skydome.

The Hornets (5-13, 1-4) were led by junior guard Cindy Alldrin, who scored a team-high 12 points and went to the free-throw line, finishing 3-of-4 for the first time in eight games. Junior forward Lindsey Heard also scored in double figures, knocking down two three-pointers in a 10-point performance.

Northern Arizona had three players in double figures, led by sophomore Alyssa Wahl, who scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 40 minutes on the court. The Lumberjacks starters missed only 14 minutes on the court combined, with Natalie Metz also playing 40 minutes.

Sacramento State had a 23-15 halftime lead, its first of the season, led by sophomore guard Kim Sheehy’s six points off two three-pointers. She has now scored at least one three-pointer in 11-straight games.

The Hornets also changed their starting lineup, inserting senior guard Tyeisha Brown and sophomore guard Stephanie Cherry, who scored four points apiece in the first 20 minutes of the game. Cherry finished with nine, while Brown scored seven.

The Lumberjacks (12-6, 3-2) opened the second half on 15-6 run in the first six minutes of the game, with Northern Arizona shooting 4-of-4 to start the half.

After taking a 30-29 lead with 14:08 left in the game, the lead changed hands eight more times until Northern Arizona went ahead for good by a score of 49-47 with 2:09 left in the game.

The Lumberjacks closed out the game with Metz, Kandis Brown and Teresa Diaz combining to go 4-of-5 from the charity stripe in the final minute.

Sacramento State shot 28.8 percent from the floor, while the Lumberjacks shot 47.9 percent, including 61.5 percent (16-of-26) in the second half.

Junior forward Ashley Cadotte led the Hornets in rebounding with a game-high nine, but the Lumberjacks were able to outrebound Sacramento State 38-32. The Hornets also forced Northern Arizona into 20 turnovers and created 11 steals, while the Lumberjacks had eight steals and forced Sacramento State into 14 turnovers.

Northern Arizona also dished out 20 assists compared to Sacramento State’s 11.

Sacramento State will continue on its road trip, heading to Eastern Washington on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
