SHEEHY SINKS FIVE THREE-POINTERS AS WOMEN’S HOOPS FALLS TO UC DAVIS 74-65

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State fell to UC Davis, 74-65, Wednesday night at The Pavillion.

For the second-straight game, the Hornets were the victims of an opposing team that shot over 50 percent from the floor during at least one half, with the Aggies shooting 64.3 percent (18-of-28) in the second.

With 1:47 left in the game, sophomore guard Stephanie Cherry cut the Aggies'' lead to 69-65, making her only basket of the game, a three-pointer from the top of the arc.

But Sacramento State (5-12, 1-3) went 0-of-5 on its next four possessions, while UC Davis (6-12) sealed its win from the free-throw line, shooting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final moments.

The Hornets were led by sophomore guard Kim Sheehy, who scored a team and career-high 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. The Santa Fe, N.M., native scored a career-high five three-pointers, including three in the first half. It was also the first time this season Sheehy has led the team in scoring.

Also scoring in double figures for Sacramento State was junior forward Katelyn Ciampi, who had a season-high tying 14 points and eight rebounds (four offensive). The Martinez, Calif., native also dished out a career-high tying four assists.

Senior guard Tyeisha Brown scored in double figures for the 11th time this season, finishing with 13 points, 11 coming in the second half, while junior forward Ashley Cadotte scored a career-high tying 12 points and added seven rebounds.

UC Davis was led by forward Ellen Porshneva, who scored a game-high 18 points. Also in double figures was Lara Gray, who finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Aggies started the second half on a 15-6 run, going 8-of-8 from the floor, to take an 11-point lead, 42-31, with 15:16 to go in the game. Nine of the Aggies'' 15 points belonged to Jessica Campbell in that time frame, as UC Davis scored on seven of its first nine possessions.

With less than 7:00 to go and UC Davis nursing a 10-point lead, 62-52, Aggie guard Jackie Turpin finished a three-point play on a breakaway lay-up plus a foul shot.

Sheehy''s fifth three-pointer and two offensive rebounds and putbacks from Ciampi cut the lead to 67-59 with 4:07 left, but Porshneva was lethal in the post answering with her eighth jumper of the game.

The Aggies did not record one steal during the game, but forced Sacramento State into 11 turnovers. While the Hornets created 10 steals and forced UC Davis into 17 turnovers.

UC Davis shot 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from behind the arc, while Sacramento State had one of its better shooting nights, sinking 28-of-67 shots from the floor for 41.8 percent.

In the first half, Sacramento State continued its perpetual slow start, by allowing UC Davis to jump out to a 10-2 lead, but a Sheehy three-pointer gave the Hornets their first lead of the game, 12-10, with 10:47 to play.

It was the 10th-straight game Sheehy has nailed a three-pointer, after shooting 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.

For only the second time this season, Sacramento State was not trailing at halftime after a last second basket from Cadotte tied the score at 25-25 before the break.

The Hornets have three games remaining on their road trip with Northern Arizona up next at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday.
