SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women’s basketball team announced today that six student athletes (four junior college, two high school) have signed National Letters of Intent and will enroll at the University in the fall of 2004. The signing class was the largest since the 1999-2000 season.Cindy Alldrin (Clackamas CC), Ashley Cadotte (Clackamas CC), Lindsay Calmettes (Clackamas CC) and Lindsey Heard (Umpqua CC) round out the junior college transfers while Ali Mollet (Del Mar HS) and Rebecca Reams (Placer HS) will join the program as freshmen.
“After bringing in players in the fall and going through a 27-game season last year, we could see our need for versatile players in the program,” said Sacramento State head coach Dan Muscatell. “We were solid defensively, but we clearly needed people who could score. The ability to score right away turned our attention to the JC level and we were fortunate to bring in the caliber of players that we did. We were able to take advantage of some network building we had established prior to coming to Sacramento State, and that turned out to be huge for us.”
Alldrin, a 5-9 guard from Clackamas CC in Oregon City, Ore., helped lead the Cougars to an NWAACC Championship in 2004. She was named NWAACC Tournament MVP while also garnering Southern Division MVP honors after averaging 16.0 points and 4.8 assists per game. As a freshman, she competed at Whatcom CC in Bellingham, Wash., where she led the Orcas to a co-Northern Division crown. Alldrin earned first team all-Northern Division honors and led the squad to a fifth-place finish at the NWAACC Tournament. A 2001 graduate of Mountain View High School in Vancouver, Wash., Alldrin broke the program’s career scoring record with 1,298 points while also setting the season mark with 491 points as a senior. A two-time league scoring leader, she garnered first team all-Greater St. Helens accolades as a junior and senior while also being named all-state in 2001 after averaging 18.5 points per game in the state tournament. Alldrin was also a second team all-GSH selection as a freshman and sophomore.
“Cindy is a very well put together kid who can score from the arc, slash to the basket and play in the post,” said Muscatell. “She will create a lot of match-up problems for other teams and has never scored less than 16.0 points per game since she was a sophomore in high school. She knows how to score the basketball.”
Cadotte, a 6-0 forward/center from Clackamas CC, competed in volleyball and basketball for the Cougars as a sophomore. In basketball, she helped lead the squad to a NWAACC Championship and a South Division title as a starting forward. Cadotte earned all-NWAACC and all-region honors while being named a Southern Division all-star after averaging 12.8 points and 11.0 rebounds per game (third, NWAACC). In volleyball, she earned all-region honors and led the Cougars to a pair of Southern Division titles as a starting middle blocker. As a freshman, Cadotte competed one year of basketball at Seattle Pacific. A 2001 graduate of Oregon City High School in Oregon City, Ore., Cadotte led the Pioneers to four-consecutive Three Rivers League crowns (1998-2001) and a pair of Oregon State titles (1998, 2001). A three-time all-TRL selection in basketball, Cadotte also led the volleyball team to a Three Rivers League title as a senior middle blocker.
“Ashley may be considered small as a post player, but she is an absolute rebounding machine,” Muscatell said. “She is a consistent double-double player who loves to rebound and is a tremendous defensive player (averages 3.0 defensive charges per game). She also comes from one of the best high school programs in the country (Oregon City).”
Calmettes, a 5-10 guard from Clackamas CC, led the Cougars to a pair of Southern Division titles and a NWAACC title in 2004. A team captain each season, Calmettes led the squad to a combined 23-5 record in conference play and a 26-4 overall record in 2004. As a senior, she averaged 14.7 points, 4.3 assists and shot 35.0 percent (28-80) from behind the arc. For her efforts, Calmettes earned first team all-Southern Division honors as a sophomore. A 2002 graduate of Gresham High School in Gresham, Ore., Calmettes was a four-sport athlete for the Gophers. In basketball, she earned first team all-Mt. Hood honors as a sophomore, junior and senior, and second-team all-conference accolades as a freshman. As a freshman, she led the Cougars to a Mt. Hood title as the squad’s starting point guard.
“Lindsay is a very special individual because she is very long, has an array of skills and is a very vocal leader,” Muscatell said. “As we were addressing our needs, we wanted to find leadership qualities in this class and we are very fortunate that she fits that package for us.”
Clackamas CC head coach Jim Martineau said his trio did not decide to play for the same school until Muscatell showed an interest during the recruiting process.
“A big part of the reason all three girls left together is what Dan is trying to build at Sacramento State,” Martineau said. “They like the challenge of playing together at the next level and trying to turn a program around.”
Heard, a 6-1 forward from Umpqua CC in Roseburg, Ore., was a JC/CC Kodak/WBCA All-America finalist after averaging 14.4 points and 12.2 rebounds (second, NWAACC) as a sophomore. She also led Umpqua to an average of 81.3 points per game (first, NWAACC) and shot 32 percent (36-114) from behind the arc that same season. A two-time first team all-NWAACC and Southern Division selection, Heard led the Timberwomen to a co-Southern Division title as a freshman. She was also named Umpqua CC Female Athlete of the Year as a freshman. A 2002 graduate of Roseburg High School, Heard was recently named one of the school’s top-10 basketball players of all time. She was a three-time first team all-Southern Oregon Conference selection while also garnering team MVP honors in 2002. As a freshman, Heard earned second team all-state honors at Umpqua Valley Christian HS.
“Lindsey is a top-20 All-America finalist who has literally played every position on the floor,” said Muscatell. “She brings tremendous versatility at the four position by having the ability to shoot from the perimeter. I recruited her at Oregon and recommended she go to Umpqua. Several Division I programs were beating down her door but fortunately for us, she looked our way.
“What I like best about out four junior college kids is they are tremendous young people who will fit in very well. They are the type of players we want associated with our program.”
Umpqua head coach Dave Stricklin said Heard was close to ending her basketball career and go to beautician school, but the idea of playing for Muscatell and the trio from Clackamas CC changed her mind.
“Dan is a major reason why she has decided to continue her career and she is excited to play for him,” Stricklin said. “Lindsey thrives in a place where she is comfortable and the fact that three Clackamas kids are going there helps as well. Lindsey and the Clackamas girls were top dogs in this area and now I think they like the challenge of doing the same thing somewhere else.”
Mollet, a 5-9 guard from Del Mar High School in San Jose, Calif., was a McDonalds All-America Nominee after earning first team all-Bay Valley Athletic League honors all four years and all-region accolades as a junior and senior. The career assists leader and second leading scoring in program history, Mollet was named to the Del Mar High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. As a junior, Mollet averaged 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 steals per game. As a freshman, she led the Dons to a BVAL league title as the starting point guard. Mollet was also a two-year member of the West Valley Basketball Club in San Jose.
“Ali is your classic gym rat,” Muscatell said. “She can shoot from long distance, has a good mid-range game and has the ability to slash to the basket. We are very excited about how she fits into our program’s needs.”
Reams, a 6-0 forward from Placer High School in Auburn, Calif., was named Biggest Comeback Player of the Year and was selected to the Optimist All-Star Game after earning all-Sierra Foothill League honors as a senior. As a junior, Reams garnered SFL honorable mention accolades and team most improved honors after averaging 13.0 points and 8.0 rebounds. She was also named all-tourney at the Harlem Carter and Lady-Trojan Toss Up Tournaments that same season. As a sophomore, Reams earned SFL honorable mention honors in her first year on the varsity squad.
“Rebecca comes from a good program at Placer HS and fell under a lot of people’s radar because of a knee injury during her junior season,” Muscatell said. “She is completely healthy now and has the ability to score from the perimeter at the four position. She fits out need for versatile players and is very excited to learn from Lindsey Heard because she plays the same type of game.”
Muscatell said a lot of credit goes to his coaching staff for bringing in arguably the best recruiting class at Sacramento State since the program joined the Div. I ranks in 1991. He is also ready to get back in the gym to prepare for the 2004-05 season.
“My staff put in a lot of long hours to identify these kids and what we needed to help this program grow,” said Muscatell. “We win games as coaches during recruiting periods and I couldn’t be happier with what we accomplished in the spring with these six kids. With our recruiting class and the commitment shown by our student body with the Recreation/Wellness/Event Center, my battery is recharged and I’m ready to start tomorrow.”
