WOMEN'S HOOPS HOLDS FIRST HALF ADVANTAGE BUT FALLS TO MONTANA

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Danielle Iceman tallied a team-high nine points while sophomore Katelyn Ciampi grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds but Montana had four players score in double figures as the Lady Griz defeated the Sacramento State women’s basketball team, 68-46, Thursday evening at the Hornets Nest.

Sacramento State is now 1-24 overall and 1-11 in the Big Sky while Montana improved to 22-4, 11-0.

Iceman, a native of Redding, Calif., finished 3-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Ciampi, a native of Martinez, Calif., recorded double figures in rebounds for the first time this season. She also led the squad in rebounds for the fifth time this season and for the third-consecutive game. Sophomore Megan Moon led the Hornets with three assists while junior Kristine Knowlton tallied two blocked shots.

Julie Deming led Montana with a game-high 19 points after going 6-of-11 from the field. Katie Edwards (11), Hollie Tyler (11) and Jody McLeod (10) also scored in double figures for the Lady Griz. Tyler also led Montana with seven rebounds and a game-high five blocks. Brooklynn Lorenzen added a game-high five steals and six assists.

In the first half, Sacramento State jumped out to an early 6-2 lead at the 18:03 mark before increasing its lead to a game-high seven points (15-8) after a three-point field goal by junior Tyeisha Brown at the 12:27 mark. Montana tied the contest (17-17) with 9:22 remaining before using a 14-6 run to make it 31-23 (2:37). McLeod’s put-back layup right before the buzzer gave Montana its largest lead of the half, 39-29.

In the second half, Montana used an 8-0 run to make it 47-29 at the 15:25 mark. Sacramento State cut the deficit to 13 (51-38) after a three-pointer by freshman Stephanie Cherry with 8:22 remaining but the Lady Griz answered with a 6-0 run to make it 57-38 (6:34). Montana ended the game by outscoring Sacramento State, 11-8.

Overall, Sacramento State shot 16-for-56 (.286) from the floor while Montana ended the contest shooting 25-for-52 (.481). Both teams grabbed 38 rebounds and Sacramento State edged Montana from behind the arc with a 5-of-16 (.313) effort compared to the Lady Griz’s 4-for-13 (.308) performance. UM finished 14-of-17 (.824) from the line compared to Sacramento State’s 9-of-13 (.692).

Sacramento State will play its final home game of the 2003-04 season against Montana State on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:05 p.m. The Hornets will honor Cindy Besio, Sydney Gatson, Danielle Iceman and Diane Peterson for Senior Night prior to the game.
